On Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons blew a 28-3 lead to the New England Patriots in the game’s second half. This crushing playoff loss prompted many on Twitter to label Atlanta as the NFL’s version of the Washington Capitals.
Warriors 🏀, Indians⚾ and Falcons🏈 all blew it. Who’s gonna be the NHL team?

Currently, the Capitals are on top of every major media’s power rankings. NHL coaches, for the second year in a row, are picking the Caps to win the Cup.
But since 2010, the Capitals have twice blown a 3-1 series lead. They were upset in the first round by the Montreal Canadiens after winning the President’s Trophy during the 2009-10 season. The Caps were eliminated in the second round by the eventual Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins after owning the league’s best regular season record last year.
We all have our ways of preparing for the annual playoff heartbreak. Here’s mine.

Back in December, a meme was circulating around social media where someone would video him or herself pouring a bag of chips into a bowl but missing. The chips would spill onto the table, and the camera would pan out to reveal a message spelled in chips. While this meme was still viral, I was inspired to tweet my own version of it with a special twist.
Caps fans and other hockey fans seemed, for the most part, to enjoy my friendly jab at the Caps. To be clear, I’m a hugely passionate Capitals fan. I’ve been following them ever since I attended my first Caps game in third grade, during Alex Ovechkin’s rookie year. But after years of playoff letdowns, I’ve been forced to find ways to cope with the annual letdowns. The video I made in October in honor of DC’s Sports Curse was one of these. Joking about the Caps’ bleak Cup chances is another.
I dream that one day the Capitals will prove me wrong, and if that happens, I will without hesitation create memes to celebrate their accomplishment. But until then I’ll rely on my coping methods to prepare for the usual heartbreak.
Dear Atlanta,
