Alex Ovechkin is now tied for the most hat tricks in the NHL since the 1995-96 season

We have now reached the point in Alex Ovechkin’s legendary career where almost every goal he scores and almost every point he tallies is historic. Wednesday night, Ovechkin tallied three goals – his 16th career hat trick. Let me put that in perspective for you.

According to @StatsCentre, the official stats account for TSN’s SportsCentre, that tied Ovechkin with former Capitals forward Peter Bondra for the most hat tricks since the 1995-96 season. Ovechkin played his first game on October 5, 2005.

It also made Ovechkin first among all active players, passing Jaromir Jagr.

The game was also Ovechkin’s 110th multi-goal game, putting him in some rare air.

Ovechkin has the most since the 1995-96 season.

He’s second if you go back to the 1994-95 season.

And he’s seventh if you go back to the 1987-88 season.

When Ovechkin scores his 200th power play goal, he will become the 18th player in NHL history to do so.

Finally, Ovechkin’s third goal ended up being the game-winning goal last night. It moved him ahead of Wayne Gretzky. He now sits 13th all time.
