Last Sunday, with the Caps-Pens series tied 1-1, four Caps fans — Christina, Caiti, Becca, and Jenny — decided they would make the drive to Pittsburgh for Game Four. “We figured it would be a fun, spontaneous trip and we really wanted to see the game and cheer on the Caps,” Christina explained to me in an email. Instead the Caps did what they do best, losing in gut-wrenching fashion during sudden death overtime.
Beyond getting interviewed by CSN, the friends’ favorite moment happened to be when they first arrived at CONSOL Energy Center.
“We were taking a group picture in front of the arena and the Stanley Cup Playoff logo,” Christina explained. “Then we just felt like these huge furry hands come up and grab us on the shoulder. We turned around and saw that it was lceburgh.”
Iceburgh is the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“We were like ewwww and made faces and just started laughing,” Christina said. Judging by her face, Caiti was the most grossed out.
But it was what happened next which forced Iceburgh to walk away.
“We pulled up our jerseys and showed Iceburgh our shirts underneath.” Christina said, revealing RMNB’s Deadguins design. “Once he saw them he ran over to more Penguins fans and we just started laughing.”
Of course it was all in good fun. Iceburgh came back a minute later and made friends with the girls, which really is a good life lesson. Just because we don’t root for the same teams, doesn’t mean we can’t be friends and respectful to each other.
