Over the summer, the Washington Capitals let Mike Green walk and the vespa-driving, 30-goal-scoring, Stealth-stick-using defenseman signed a three-year, $18 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings. We said our goodbyes then. We moved on (OR SO WE THOUGHT).
In the second period of Game One, Greener scored his first career NHL playoff goal with a team not named the Washington Capitals. Green blasted a deflected shot past Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop.
The feels.
Green played coy on the celebration. He acted like it wasn’t a big deal, but I did capture this huge grin.
Recently the Red Wings released a feature on Green where he talked about his departure from Washington.
“Washington propelled me to the NHL,” Green said. “I was lucky enough that I was able to step in as a young guy right away and develop. It’s in the past now but it always be a part of memory. I share a lot of my memories there with a lot of good guys.
“I think after ten years, sometimes you get a little stagnant,” Green continued. “With change comes growth. You can evolve not only as a player but a person. I thought it was time. I thought a lot about it. A lot of change. Definitely a lot of change.”
In his first season in Motown, Green scored seven goals and tallied 31 points, his worst offensive season in the NHL since the lockout shortened 2012-13 season.
