St. Cloud, Minnesota, native and Caps defenseman Nate Schmidt was all smiles in a pregame interview before tonight’s game against the Minnesota Wild.
It was a beautiful mess, just like Jason Chimera’s conversation with John Walton Wednesday.
Schmidt’s interview began by describing how he spent his first night home.
“I went over to my cousin’s place over by Lake Calhoun,” Schmidt said. “My mom, my dad, my brother, and my cousins were all there. We ordered some sushi and it was really fun. It was good to see some of them again.”
He answered questions regarding the current NHL standings, his own play, and how he thinks the team is doing energy-wise. Typical pregame hockey questions. Nothing out of the ordinary.
But then things took a wild turn.
Near the end of the video, Schmidty was describing the memories he’s had in the Xcel Energy Center from when he was a kid, and said he and Matt Niskanen, also from Minnesota, took a trip around the concourse yesterday. “That was really fun,” Schmidt said. “Just to reflect on our memories here, which was a lot of great things . . . some not so great. But, you know what, hey, it’s great to be back –”
The sentimentality of the moment stopped in its tracks when numerous teammates interrupted him with a chorus of “Yeah, right!”
Jason Chimera‘s voice, although, stood out from the crowd, jokingly telling Schmidt to “wrap it up!”, and mentioned Nate’s University of Minnesota hockey team.
Chimera was ribbing Schmidt about his Minnesota ties. Yelled something to the effect of, “Back when I was a Gopher… “

Chimera earned chuckles from everyone in the room, including Schmidt with the loudest laugh you’ve ever heard. “The glory days,” responded Schmidt.
He continued his attempt to finish the interview, but was, again, put on hold by his teammates.
So many people. Wilson and Chimera were yelling. Burakovsky put bunny ears on one of the cameramen. https://t.co/Tkyeqaz7ka

At long last, Nate was able to finish the last few seconds of the interview without interruptions, being a great sport about it.
