Last Saturday, during the Capitals’ long break between games, center Nicklas Backstrom tattooed someone. And by tattooed I truly mean he permanently carved a message into someone’s body with needle and ink.
In a video published by Sweden’s biggest newspaper Aftonbladet, Backstrom tattoos the word Skön…t! onto former Swedish Idol judge and hockey/media guy Daniel Breitholtz.
According to Magnus Cadelin, the tattoo is inspired by a joke quote from Backstrom a decade ago.
The mess-up can be seen at the five-second mark.
In 2005, a 17-year-old Backstrom went viral when he misspoke on a Swedish sports kids show. He missed out on the letter t while saying the word skönt, Swedish for comfortable or good. Translated, it would sound something like, “It feels goo.. (awkward silence) D!”
This clip is a Swedish classic. In his younger days, Nicky was actually more famous for this than for his hockey.
Breitholtz, currently on a trip visiting NHL stars, got the tattoo to commemorate the goof up.
While putting the needle into Breitholtz’s arm, Backstrom explains his goof up.
“I remember, me and my friends back home in Gävle laughed pretty good about [the appearance on “Lilla Sportspegeln],” he said. “We laughed, and laughed about it, over and over again [laughs]. And I’ve heard people talk about [the video] a lot and. It is actually really funny.”
“I misspoke and thought to myself, ‘Should I act a little cool and just add a T?'” says Backstrom. “And so I did it, I just added the T. I’ll imagine there’s a lot of people back home, watching youtube videos in their pre-parties, going ‘Oh, watch this clip!'”
The tattoo was done at Laughing Hyena Tattoos in Washington.
