Washington Capitals defense prospect Christian Djoos scored two goals and an assist as his Brynas lost to HV71 7-4 on Saturday.
Djoos, who was held off the scoresheet in the first seven games of the season, now has two goals and two assists in the last three games.
Saturday’s contest was Djoos’ first multi-goal game in the top tier Swedish league. The 20-year-old defenseman, who was signed over the summer to a three year entry-level contract, also tied his career high in points in a single game and registered season high 23:33 of ice time.
Djoos’ first point of the night was an assist on a goal by Greg Scott. The Caps prospect picked off an errant clear and launched a hard low shot. In front of the net, Scott tipped the puck to beat goalie Gustaf Wesslau high to give Brynas the lead.
To score his first goal of the year, Djoos launched a perfect one-timer from the point as Wesslau was caught moving in the opposite direction. That goal gave Brynas some hope late in the second period.
On his second tally of the game, Djoos walked from the right point, fetching a perfectly timed pass from the former Canucks draft pick Anton Rodin. His initial attempt was denied, but he got his own rebound and put the puck in the gaping net. Brynas got within one with this goal, but allowed another goal 38 seconds later before surrendering an empty-netter.
Throughout the game Djoos showed the poise and hockey IQ you would expect from the prospect who is playing in his third full season as a pro. His decision-making was terrific and he was consistently pushing the play to the offensive zone, generating the pressure on the opposition’s net.
With that type of play, it’s only a matter of time when he starts getting points on a regular basis.
