Report: The Capitals were in on Taylor Hall before he was traded to the Boston Bruins

Much of the talk heading into the trade deadline was that Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan was interested in upgrading his goaltending depth ahead of the postseason. But in the 24 hours ahead of the 3 PM buzzer, the Capitals have been linked with several intriguing forwards.

Sunday, TSN’s Frank Seravalli reported that the Capitals were among several teams trying to land Nick Foligno from the Columbus Blue Jackets for a first-round pick. Later that night, the Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta reported that the Capitals also tried to acquire the biggest star of this year’s deadline, 2018 MVP Taylor Hall.

Capitals trade Jonas Siegenthaler to New Jersey Devils for third-round pick

The Washington Capitals made their first move ahead of Monday’s 3 PM trade deadline. The Capitals sent young defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler to the New Jersey Devils for a third-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

The Capitals lose a depth defenseman that has promise but gain salary cap relief to either add another piece on Monday or possibly welcome a player back to the lineup off long-term injured reserve such as Michal Kempny.

Florida Panthers trade Brett Connolly, picks, and prospects to Chicago Blackhawks for Lucas Wallmark and Lucas Carlsson

Former Capitals forward Brett Connolly will now be playing for his third team in three years after being dealt in a trade deadline deal on Thursday.

The Florida Panthers traded Connolly and a package of prospects and a draft pick to the Chicago Blackhawks for defenseman Lucas Carlsson and forward Lucas Wallmark.

The deal gives the Panthers, the second-best team in the NHL, salary cap space (Connolly had a $3.5 AAV) to potentially replace injured defenseman Aaron Ekblad and two depth players as they make their stretch run.

Islanders land Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac from Devils for prospects and picks

The Washington Capitals and New York Islanders are tied for first place in the East Division after the Isles defeated the Caps 1-0 Tuesday at Nassau Coliseum. A night later, the Islanders have made a major trade deadline deal that will give them some much-needed forward depth after losing Anders Lee for the season with a knee injury.

The Islanders acquired Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac from the New Jersey Devils for prospects and picks (forwards A.J. Greer, Mason Jobst, the Islanders first-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.)

The Devils agreed to retain 50 percent of both Palmieri and Zajac’s salaries to make the deal happen.

Pittsburgh Penguins trade Matt Murray to Ottawa Senators

Ahead of the start of Day Two of the NHL Draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins completed a trade with the Ottawa Senators that will give Pittsburgh more cap relief for next season.

The Penguins traded two-time Stanley Cup champion goaltender Matt Murray, who is a restricted free agent this fall, to the Senators for forward prospect Jonathan Gruden and a 2020 second-round pick (CBJ), number 52 overall.

Finally official: Penguins trade Patric Hornqvist to Panthers for Mike Matheson and Colton Sceviour

Reports surfaced on Wednesday that the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers were trading forward Patric Hornqvist for defenseman Mike Matheson, but official confirmation never came. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the deal was held up by Hornqvist’s no-trade clause and injury insurance.

Thursday afternoon, the two teams finally made the trade official. Forward Colton Sceviour will also join Matheson in Pittsburgh.

Penguins trade Phil Kessel to Coyotes for Alex Galchenyuk and prospect Pierre-Olivier Joseph

Phil Kessel has been dealt after all.

After a reported deal to Minnesota for Jason Zucker fell through, the Pittsburgh Penguins have sent Kessel, minor league defenseman Dane Birks, and a fourth-round pick to the Arizona Coyotes for Alex Galchenyuk and 19-year-old defense prospect Pierre-Olivier Joseph.

News of a broader Kessel deal was first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. TSN’s Darren Dreger was the first to report the full trade.

Washington Capitals trade Andre Burakovsky to Colorado Avalanche for draft picks

Andre Burakovsky’s tenure with the Washington Capitals is officially over.

After being linked in trade rumors for much of the 2018-19 season, the Swedish forward has been sent to the Colorado Avalanche for two draft picks and a minor leaguer.

The Athletic’s Ryan Clark was the first to report the news.

The ctrl+z trade: Penguins player Tom Wilson knocked out gets traded back to Dallas for draft pick he was originally traded for

Do you ever get a weird sense of déjà vu?

On Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins traded defenseman Jamie Oleksiak — the player that Tom Wilson knocked out and was supposedly too intimidated to fight — in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2019 draft. The trade is almost identical to the one that happened in reverse to bring Oleksiak to the Penguins during the 2017-18 season.

Capitals Acquire Mike Weber from the Buffalo Sabres

The Capitals made a late afternoon trade Tueday, acquiring defenseman Mike Weber from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a third round 2017 draft pick. Buffalo will retain half of Weber’s $2 million salary. He is scheduled to become a UFA at the end of the year.

Weber’s acquisition puts another big body like Brooks Orpik on the Caps’ blueline. The trade is a bit of a surprise, seeing as the Capitals already have a lot of very good defensemen playing right now.

Perhaps Weber will simply serve as insurance since some members of the team’s blue line have been banged up this season.
