Capitals reporter Tarik El-Bashir hired by Turner Sports to contribute to its NHL broadcast team

Turner Sports announced more of its NHL broadcast team on Tuesday and one Capitals media member is getting a huge opportunity. Tarik El-Bashir, who has contributed coverage of the Caps over the last decade via The Athletic, Washington Post, and NBC Sports Washington, has been hired as a contributor.

“I’m so excited to be a part of this amazing team!” El-Bashir said in a tweet. “Thanks to everyone at Turner for the opportunity. And, yes, I’m still going to be covering the Caps full-time for The Athletic. Let’s go!”

Tarik joins Jackie Redmond and Jennifer Botterill as the other Turner Sports NHL contributors.

On Monday, December 9, 2019, our website, Russian Machine Never Breaks, will celebrate its tenth anniversary. (Come to our party!). Over the years, lots of people expressed puzzlement at why we named our hockey website after the United States’ geopolitical rival.

The name is actually a quote uttered by Alex Ovechkin thirteen years ago. Recently I spoke to The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir, the beat writer who first reported the viral quote, about its origin.

Chris Kuc leaves The Athletic, Tarik El-Bashir returns to cover Caps

Coverage of the Washington Capitals on The Athletic will look different starting this summer. On Thursday morning, Caps writer Chris Kuc announced he is joining the Chicago Blackhawks’ in-house digital content team, and former Caps beat writer Tarik El-Bashir announced he will return to the Caps beat.

El-Bashir previously covered the Caps for NBC Sports Washington and The Washington Post.

Sources: Former NBCSW Capitals reporter Tarik El-Bashir will join Athletic DC

The fast-growing sports news and features site The Athletic announced on Monday that it will launch a DC presence in early September. While they have yet to announce which reporters they’re poaching from DC media, multiple sources have confirmed to RMNB that former NBC Sports Washington Capitals reporter Tarik El-Bashir is among them.

But El-Bashir, who’s covered the Capitals for seven of the past 11 season, won’t be covering the Capitals. We’re told he’ll cover football.

Capitals play-by-play announcer Joe Beninati wins two Emmys

CSN Mid-Atlantic’s Joe Beninati, who is the best, was once again declared the best by his peers during the 59th Capital Emmy Awards. Held at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, the Capitals play-by-play announcer took home two Emmy awards for his work during the 2016 calendar year: Best Sports Play-by-Play Announcer and Best Sports Event/Game – Live/Unedited.

The sublimely dressed Beninati wore a black tuxedo along with a white dress shirt and fancy bow tie.

Apparently Evgeny Kuznetsov is Iron Man

Evgeny Kuznetsov was demoted from first-line center to a fourth-line winger ahead of Russia’s final World Cup of Hockey pre-tournament game against Canada, Wednesday.

“That’s because he went to Oleg Valerievich [Znarok] and said he doesn’t want to play on the line with Ovechkin and Kucherov anymore,” Ovechkin deadpanned while speaking with Pavel Lysenkov after practice. “I am still in shock.”

“And they moved me to the 4th line!,” a laughing Kuznetsov replied.

Tarik El-Bashir Returns to Cover the Caps for CSN

When RMNB got started, The Washington Post’s Capitals coverage was anchored by the wise and gregarious Tarik El-Bashir. In 2012 Tarik left the Post and the sport to cover the Redskins for CSN, but now he’s making a homecoming, taking over the mantle of CSN’s Capitals Insider.
