New York Islanders leapfrog to the top of the Metropolitan division, Capitals fall to third

The Capitals’ loss to Barry Trotz’s New York Islanders on Friday night was a proverbial four point game in the NHL’s Metropolitan division.

With the win, the Islanders overtook both the Capitals and the Columbus Blue Jackets to secure the first place in the division.

Columbus Blue Jackets pass Washington Capitals for Metropolitan Division lead

The Caps’ defeat at the barbecue-stained hands of the Nashville Predators had consequences. Earlier on Tuesday night the Columbus Blue Jackets felled the New Jersey Devils, thereby passing the Caps in the division standings.

After tonight’s win, the Capitals were in first place in the Metropolitan Division for eight minutes

The Washington Capitals had a crummy first 20 games of the season, but after some line changes, Matt Niskanen’s return from injury, and some home games, the Capitals are back in contention of the Metropolitan Division.
