Caps-Blues highlights: The bad start, the comeback, and then the L in the shootout

The Washington Capitals fell to 7-9-3 after losing to the St. Louis Blues 5-4 in the shootout on Friday.

The Capitals fell behind 3-0 in the first period before finding their game in the second after Alex Ovechkin’s 789th career goal.

The Capitals out-shot the Blues 40-12 in the second and third periods combined. They eventually tied the game 4-4 with a Conor Sheary goal in the third period, forcing overtime, but later fell in the shootout.

An almost complete comeback: Blues beat Capitals 5-4 (SO)

The Washington Capitals did battle with the hot St. Louis Blues inside Enterprise Center on Thursday night. To avoid a three-game losing streak, the Caps would need to topple a Blues team that had won four in a row prior to puck drop.

Brayden Schenn, Pavel Buchnevich, and Torey Krug tallied in succession in the first period to give the Blues a big early lead. Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson responded with two second-period strikes to get their team back into the game. Ryan O’Reilly quieted some of that momentum soon after with a nifty roofed backhand.

Carlson struck again on a late power play to make things interesting. Conor Sheary tied things up soon after. Nada in overtime, so shootout bullets.

Kuznetsov put the biscuit in the basket (very slowly again)
Tarasenko did not put the biscuit in the basket
Ovechkin did not put the biscuit in the basket
O’Reilly put the biscuit in the basket

Capitals vs Blues live blog and updates (Nov. 17, 2022)

This is your place to check for updates and comment along with the Capitals vs. St. Louis Blues game on November 17, 2022.

The Washington Capitals have won only two of their last eight games and are currently sitting 12th in the Eastern Conference.

The Caps will hope to reverse their losing ways against St. Louis where they will conclude their three-game road trip. Charlie Lindgren will get the start in goal over Darcy Kuemper. The Blues have won four-straight games.

Tonight’s game is on NBC Sports Washington and puck drop is a little after 8 pm.

Jordan Binnington on why he threw an empty water bottle at Nazem Kadri: ‘I felt like it was a god-given opportunity’

If you thought the drama from the St. Louis Blues and Colorado Avalanche second-round series was over…think again.

Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington was asked Tuesday during the team’s season wrap-up session with the media why exactly he chucked an empty water bottle at Nazem Kadri after Game Three in the series.

He had days to formulate a coherent, reasonable response and this is what he said.

Darren Helm scores goal with just 5.6 seconds left in regulation to send Colorado Avalanche to Western Conference Final

The Edmonton Oilers now know their Western Conference Final dance partner as the Colorado Avalanche finally put the St. Louis Blues away in six games. In typical NHL playoff fashion, it had to happen in theatrical circumstances.

Avs forward Darren Helm slammed a puck past Blues goaltender Ville Husso with just 5.6 seconds left in regulation to seal the deal. The hockey equivalent of a buzzer-beater gave Colorado a 3-2 lead and sent the Blues to their offseason stunned.

Nathan MacKinnon goes coast-to-coast for unbelievable hat trick goal in Game Five thriller

The Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon seems to always save some of his best hockey for the playoffs and that did not change on Wednesday night in Game Five against the St. Louis Blues. The 26-year-old center recorded the second postseason hat trick of his career and capped it off in tremendous style.

This goal is some coast-to-coast, must-see action.

David Perron tries to deliver flying elbow on Nazem Kadri as Kadri celebrates part of Game Four hat trick

St. Louis Blues forward David Perron apparently thought he was “Macho Man” Randy Savage for a period of time in the Blues’ 6-3 Game Four loss to the Colorado Avalanche. Perron lined up Avs forward Nazem Kadri for a flying elbow as the latter was mid-celebration after scoring his second of three goals in Colorado’s round two victory.

Luckily for probably both Perron and Kadri, the elbow whiffed but it’s just the latest moment of heated extracurriculars in a series that has already had the temperature turned up far too much.

Avalanche defender Samuel Girard broke his sternum after taking huge hit, out for the rest of the playoffs

The Colorado Avalanche got some pretty terrible news on Saturday. Head coach Jared Bednar announced to the media that top-four defenseman Samuel Girard has broken his sternum and will be out for the rest of the playoffs.

Girard suffered the injury on a brutal hit behind the net by St. Louis Blues forward Ivan Barbashev.

Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington throws water bottle at Avalanche forward Nazem Kadri during TNT postgame interview

Things are getting a little spicy in the Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues round two series. Avalanche forward Nazem Kadri felt that heat as he gave a postgame interview to the TNT panel after his team’s big 5-2 win in Game Three.

Blues goaltender and noted hothead Jordan Binnington chucked a water bottle at Kadri as the Avs center was giving an answer about a collision he had with Binnington during the game. Binnington was injured on the play.

Capitals take forty minutes off and it turns out you cant do that in the NHL: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals dropped their second game in a row in regulation as they took a very uninspired 5-2 home loss to the St. Louis Blues. They basically took the final two periods off. You can’t do that.

Not fun!
