When you record the audio of the Capitals’ Zoom interviews, sometimes you get some gems. Such as today when TJ Oshie entered the Capitals’ makeshift interview room enthusiastically humming a song.
“Can they see me?” Oshie asks. A Capitals PR person says yes.
“Mic’s on? Hey, guys! How’s it going?”
And then the interview happened like normal.
If you thought Nicklas Backstrom practiced in complete silence with a very serious look on his face, you’d *checks Twitter* be wrong.
The Capitals released a mic’d up video of Backstrom from a recent bubble hockey practice on Friday. While Backstrom is predictably very competitive on the ice, he also cracks jokes.
“New drill! Suck it, [team] white,” Backstrom says.
And yes, he’s both a singer and a dancer.
The NHL Draft Combine is a time for prospects to demonstrate their physical abilities, skating skills, and work ethic. Often, teams who are interested in particular prospects set up interviews with them in order to get a better sense of who they are as people, not just as players.
One particularly interesting story about the Capitals’ approach to those combine interviews was shared by a highly-ranked international prospect, Vasili Podkolzin. Through a translator, Podkolzin told NHL.com Deputy Managing Editor Adam Kimelman that in their interview, “Washington asked if I know how to sing.”
Podkolzin’s response was “if they draft me I’ll sing to them.”

Everybody has skeletons in their closet. For instance, when I was six years old, my dad showed up to one of my school assemblies dressed up as a globe for Earth Day. He wore blue tights, a big giant globe costume, and I just realized that no power in the world is going to make me finish this story here.

At the Caps Convention today, there was a Kids Press Conference where Matt Bradley, Eric Fehr & Alex Ovechkin all took questions from young Caps Fans. The segment was adorable from the start, but it reached an epic level when a cute girl named MacKenzie took the mic. Her question for the players was, “Today is my birthday. Can Matt Bradley and Eric Fehr sing “Happy Birthday” to me in English? And can Ovi sing it to me in Russian?” Without hesitation, the guys started to sing. What a great birthday gift and what a great bunch of guys! Above, the video starts in the middle of Brads and Fehr’s rendition. Enjoy!
