Riley Sutter, the Hershey Bears’ Calder Cup champion fourth-line center, signs one-year contract extension with Capitals

One third of the Hershey Bears’ stellar fourth line that helped them power through the 2023 Calder Cup playoffs is sticking around in the organization.

The Washington Capitals announced on Tuesday that they have re-signed forward Riley Sutter to a one-year, two-way contract where he will make $90,000 guaranteed each season.

Sutters’s contract, per the Caps, will pay him $775k at the NHL level and $90k in the AHL. The deal is a $20,000 raise for Sutter compared to the salary he earned with Hershey last year.

He was a restricted free agent.

Capitals extend qualifying offers to Martin Fehervary, Riley Sutter, and Henrik Borgstrom; non-tender Kody Clark and Gabriel Carlsson

The Washington Capitals extended qualifying offers to Martin Fehervary, Riley Sutter, and Henrik Borgstrom before Friday’s 5 pm deadline. This means the team retains their rights moving forward.

Capitals opted to non-tender qualifying offers to Kody Clark and Gabriel Carlsson. They will become unrestricted free agents when free agency opens Saturday at noon.

Behind the scenes of the Hershey Bears’ 2023 Calder Cup championship celebration at Giant Center

HERSHEY, PA — The Hershey Bears celebrated the franchise’s twelfth Calder Cup championship at Giant Center on Saturday afternoon. The event marked the first public event fans could attend since the Bears lifted the AHL’s championship trophy in Southern California early Thursday morning. Alternate captain and inventor of the ROAR, Mike Vecchione, scored on a rebound to in overtime of Game 7 to eliminate the first-year Coachella Valley Firebirds in thrilling fashion.

The championship ceremony began at 3 pm and was open to the public. There were so many Bears fans in attendance, many of the players, who had barely slept since winning the championship days before, stayed hours after they were scheduled to leave so no one left empty-handed.

Nothing about the celebration or the fan support felt minor league.

Capitals new assistant coach Mitch Love has past connections to three Capitals prospects

The Washington Capitals made their first hire to join Spencer Carbery’s coaching staff on Thursday when they brought in assistant coach Mitch Love to handle the team’s defensemen.

Love spoke with assembled DC media for the first time on Friday. The 39-year-old, two-time AHL coach of the year discussed a variety of topics including his familiarity with a few names in the Caps organization that just took home a Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears.

Riley Sutter wins Game Three in overtime to claw Hershey Bears back into Calder Cup Finals

HERSHEY, PA — The Hershey Bears just made it a series and in the most stressful way possible.

After being shutout in consecutive games by Joey Daccord, the Chocolate and White finally pierced the Coachella Valley Firebirds goaltender for five goals, winning Game Three 5-4 in overtime.

Fourth-line center Riley Sutter scored the game-winning goal 13:34 into the first overtime after Hershey surrendered a two-goal lead late in the third period.

The Bears now trail Coachella Valley two games to one in the Calder Cup Finals with Games Four and Five upcoming in Hershey.

Hershey Bears players answer: ‘Who’s the most famous person in your phone?’

The Washington Capitals are the 12th-worst team in the NHL and could take some figurative TNT to their roster over the next two weeks. So let’s turn our attention to one of the very best teams in the American Hockey League, the Hershey Bears, who may supply some players to the Capitals’ roster in the coming weeks.

The Bears were asked an interesting question from their social media team: Who is the most famous person in your phone, and do they pick up if you call them?

Some answered seriously and others joked around. The video is a good barometer of how many likable characters the team has.

Capitals cut 22 players from Training Camp roster

The Washington Capitals announced a huge group of cuts from their Training Camp roster on Friday. Twenty-two players were sent back to their respective clubs, trimming down the overall group in DC to 40.

The Caps’ AHL affiliate Hershey Bears start their Training Camp early next week and all but one of the cuts in this group is headed to Pennsylvania for that. Four of the players will need to make it through waivers before being allowed to do so.

The news was announced by Capitals PR.

Capitals cut six players from training camp roster, re-assign Axel Jonsson-Fjallby back to Hershey

After the Capitals’ second scrimmage on Sunday, head coach Peter Laviolette promised some cuts to the team’s training camp roster. After notifying players last night, those decisions were announced Monday morning.

The Washington Capitals cut six players and either loaned or re-assigned them to their junior or minor league hockey teams. Meanwhile, the Capitals called Axel Jonsson-Fjallby back from Sweden’s HockeyAllsvenskan and are assigning him to Hershey.

The cuts leave the Capitals with 34 players on their training camp roster which includes five goalies.

Washington Capitals loan Riley Sutter to Hershey Bears

The Washington Capitals announced on Tuesday that they have loaned forward Riley Sutter to the Hershey Bears.

Sutter, the Capitals’ third-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, sustained an injury during the first game of the 2019 Prospect Showcase, and has been rehabilitating in Hershey since being cut from the Capitals roster. Sutter’s first game with the Bears will mark his professional debut, and he’s slated to wear number 24.

Alex Alexeyev doubtful for start of Capitals Training Camp

After taking a high, dirty hit from Predators defenseman Josh Healey at the 2019 NHL Prospect Showcase, Alex Alexeyev is being held out of the start of practices at the Capitals’ Training Camp.

According to The Washington Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan, this is due to an upper-body injury/concussion. Following the hit, which occurred during the Capitals 3-2 loss to the Predators, Alexeyev did not return to the game nor play in the final outing of the Showcase, though Hershey Bears head coach Spencer Carberry said at the time, “We took him out of the game for precautionary reasons to make sure. He had to go through the [concussion] protocol, and everything was good.”
