Craig Anderson announces retirement after emotional final NHL win

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Craig Anderson announced on Thursday night that he’s hanging up the skates after a 20-year NHL career. Though he did not formally confirm his retirement until after the game, the Sabres gave their goalie a proper sendoff in his last NHL start.

The former Capitals goaltender finished his career with 319 total NHL wins. He is one of only 39 goaltenders to win 300 or more games. Fittingly, Anderson’s final start came against the Ottawa Senators, with whom he spent 10 seasons.

Former Capitals forward Mathieu Perreault retires after 13 seasons in the NHL

Former Capitals forward Mathieu Perreault retired from professional hockey on Thursday after 13 seasons in the NHL.

Perreault-cho cinco will not be out of a job long though. The Drummondville, Quebec-native will join the French-speaking TVA Sports network this fall and give his analysis on La Poche Bleue le midi — a daily sports news show providing “discussions, analysis, entertainment, and lots of fun”.

Dan ‘Beaker’ Stuck announces he will retire in 2023 after spending parts of five decades with the Hershey Bears

For those that have attended a Hershey Bears game, they’ve likely seen or run into a man that is affectionally known as Beaker. Beaker, whose real name is Dan Stuck, has been a fixture in Hershey for parts of the last five decades. He’s as Hershey as Hersheypark and his stories are as rich as the chocolate produced there.

Wednesday, the Bears’ longtime head athletic trainer announced he would be retiring from the team at the end of the year.

Alex Semin and Alex Ovechkin score hat tricks in Semin’s farewell game in Krasnoyarsk

Alex Semin’s team defeated Team Datsyuk 10-9 in Semin’s farewell game from hockey on Thursday. Semin, 38, announced his retirement in May.

Semin’s farewell game, entitled The Match of World Hockey Stars – the Legendary Overtime, featured former Capitals teammates Alex Ovechkin and Viktor Kozlov. Other notables included Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov, former Capital Andrei Nikolishin (1998 Stanley Cup Final team), and Dallas Stars goaltender Anton Khudobin. The proceeds from the ticket sales went to orphanages in the area as well as to the development of sled hockey in Krasnoyarsk.

Semin and Ovechkin both netted hat tricks in the victory. Arguably the most beautiful play came when Semin assisted on an Ovechkin goal by chipping a pass overtop the net that fell perfectly in the crease for an Ovechkin put back.

Alex Semin retires from professional hockey, will invite Alex Ovechkin to farewell charity game

Washington Capitals legend Alex Semin is reportedly hanging up his skates. Sport RBC announced the news while publishing about a farewell game the forward is hoping to hold over the summer.

Semin did not play at all during the 2021-22 KHL season. The 38-year-old works as an advisor to the director of the Krasnoyarsk hockey club Sokol in Russia’s VHL league, the second tier of hockey in the country.

Troy Brouwer, scorer of the Capitals’ game-winning Winter Classic goal, announces retirement after 14 season in the NHL

Former Capitals forward Troy Brouwer announced his retirement on Thursday after 14 seasons in the NHL.

“I’m going to miss the relationships that I was able to make over the years with guys on my teams and their families,” Brouwer said in an interview with the St. Louis Blues. “Playing this game, you always get to meet new people, you always get to have experiences with those people and a lot of those you’ll carry with you for the rest of your life. I’m going to miss that competitiveness, and I’m going to miss those big moments where you have an opportunity to do something amazing after you’ve worked your whole life to get to that moment.”

Brouwer scored 152 points (83g, 69a) in 293 games with the Capitals. His best year came during the 2013-14 season when he scored a career-high 25 goals and 43 points under Adam Oates.

The Brouwer Pouwer leader’s biggest moment as a Capital will always be the 2015 Winter Classic where he scored the game-winning goal with 12.9 seconds remaining in the game.

Henrik Lundqvist announces his retirement from hockey: ‘It’s time.’

Henrik Lundqvist is calling it a career after a heart condition caused him to miss the entire 2020-21 season.

Lundqvist announced his retirement during a press conference at Scandinavium Arena in Gothenburg, Sweden. The barn is where Lundqvist watched his first professional hockey game as a five-year-old and is the home to Frölunda HC – the team Lundqvist would star with as a teenager before moving on to the NHL during the 2005-06 season.

The King ends his career never having played a game for the Washington Capitals. He leaves the game with 459 wins, the sixth-most victories in NHL history and the most among goalies who played every game of their career with one team (New York Rangers).

Brooks Laich formally announces his retirement from hockey: ‘I am beyond grateful’

Three years after playing his last NHL hockey game, Brooks Laich, 38, formally announced his retirement from professional hockey on Friday. “It’s been a difficult journey for me to finally arrive at the state where I am happy say the words ‘I am retiring,'” Laich wrote on Instagram. “Every athlete experiences this transition differently, and though the process went slower than I had hoped, I am excited to have finally arrived at peace with it.”

Laich, who spent the vast majority of his career with the Washington Capitals, played his final season in the NHL during the 2017-18 season where he suited up in 12 games for the Los Angeles Kings.

Former Capital Taylor Chorney announces retirement from hockey

Former Capital Taylor Chorney is calling it a career.

Thursday, the 33-year-old defenseman announced his retirement from hockey after spending the 2020-21 season with EC Salzburg of the Austrian ICE Hockey League. Chorney scored 14 points (4g, 10a) in 34 games. The European league features franchises from Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, and Italy.

Chorney left the NHL after ending the 2017-18 season with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He spent two seasons with HC Lugano of the Swiss National League before signing in the ICEHL.

Howie Kendrick, a key member of the Washington Nationals’ World Series team, announces retirement

Howie Kendrick has decided to hang up his cleats a week after Mike Rizzo and Davey Martinez said they expected the DH and second baseman would return.

Kendrick announced his retirement on Instagram. The 37-year-old slugger played 15 years in the MLB and was a major reason why the Washington Nationals won the World Series in 2019.

“I will be forever grateful for the many life lessons baseball has taught me on this 32 year journey,” Kendrick wrote.

He also had a special message for the Nationals. “[T]hank you for embracing me as one of your own. I feel as though I’d been a National my whole career and the wild, humbling and crazy ride we had in 2019 truly culminated everything I’d learned in my career, and we all became World Champions.
