Capitals legend Reid Cooper signs amateur tryout with Boston Bruins’ ECHL team

Reid Cooper recently got his dream call to the NHL while sitting on his couch watching The Bourne Supremacy.

Now, he’s taking his talents to the ECHL.

The Maine Mariners announced that they signed the college goaltender to an amateur tryout. Cooper inked the deal before Game Three of the Mariners’ first-round playoff series against the Reading Royals.

The Mariners are the ECHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins.

Reid Cooper was sitting on his couch watching Bourne Supremacy with his college roommates when he got the call from the Capitals

Without Charlie Lindgren available due to injury, the Capitals were facing a conundrum heading into their final game of the season against the New Jersey Devils. The team is capped out and could not call up a goaltender from AHL Hershey to back up Darcy Kuemper.

So the team made a call to Curry College goaltender Reid Cooper and signed the student to an amateur tryout offer.

Cooper took the ice for the Caps’ morning skate on Thursday. In the locker room afterward, he said that the Capitals first made contact with him while he was watching The Bourne Supremacy — the second movie of the Matt Damon Bourne series — with his college roommates. He added that he was sitting on the couch, which feels like an important detail to note.

Capitals sign goaltender Reid Cooper to amateur tryout agreement, will serve as Darcy Kuemper’s backup against Devils

The Washington Capitals announced that they signed goaltender Reid Cooper to an amateur tryout agreement before their season finale matchup against the New Jersey Devils.

Cooper will serve as Darcy Kuemper’s backup against the Devils after Charlie Lindgren was hurt in Tuesday’s loss to the Boston Bruins. Lindgren did not participate in Thursday’s morning skate.
