NHL and NHLPA investigating Mike Babcock phone controversy as previous Leafs player openly criticizes former coach

Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Mike Babcock is back in a fire of his own making this week after a story dropped on Paul Bissonnette’s Spittin’ Chiclets podcast Monday regarding peculiar behavior with Blue Jackets players’ cell phones.

Now, both the NHL and NHLPA have begun investigating the controversy, with Bissonnette and Babcock each maintaining their sides of the story. One of Babcock’s former players chimed in, former Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Frankie Corrado giving his take on the First Up radio show.

Mike Babcock reportedly asked Columbus players to come into his office and show him photos from their cell phones

Mike Babcock got his first NHL job this past offseason after a multi-year absence from the league caused by toxic, abusive off-ice behavior that led to his dismissal from the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019.

The Columbus Blue Jackets took the chance on Babcock perhaps learning from his prior mistakes and signed him to a two-year contract in July. If emerging reports from NHL on TNT analyst and former NHLer Paul Bissonnette are true, it’s questionable if Babcock has learned anything at all from his previous controversies.

Bissonnette said that one of the first things Babcock did in charge of Columbus was call team captain Boone Jenner into his office and ask to see the photos on his personal cell phone.

Connor Bedard roasts Paul Bissonnette, confirms he once hung up on Wayne Gretzky during TNT’s Stanley Cup Final coverage

The NHL on TNT analyst panel has brought the personality during the 2023 postseason. We’ve seen Wayne Gretzky discuss his underwear habits, Paul Bissonnette compare Radko Gudas to Chewbacca, and the Toronto Maple Leafs roasted on national TV.

The hijinks haven’t stopped just because the league’s final playoff series has arrived. Before Game Two of the Stanley Cup Final, the panel hosted special guest Connor Bedard, AKA: the soon-to-be first-overall pick 2023 NHL Draft selection.

Bedard didn’t disappoint with his appearance. Just ask Biz, who was on the receiving end of a cold one-liner from the usually boring superstar prospect.

Wayne Gretzky changed his underwear after every period as a player and other priceless stories from TNT’s NHL panel

The Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers took Game One to quadruple overtime Thursday night, with Matthew Tkachuk scoring the OTGWG at 1:54 am Friday morning. The game was the sixth-longest in NHL history, and the longest game in either franchises’ history.

The late hours combined with the sheer length of the game and the lack of OT highlights caused the TNT panel — featuring host Liam McHugh and former players Wayne Gretzky, Paul Bissonnette, Anson Carter, and Henrik Lundqvist — to become rather silly as they tried to fill time during those extra intermissions.

Egged on by McHugh, the legends shared stories from their past overtime experiences and playing days, including multiple laugh-out-loud stories from Gretzky.

Wayne Gretzky chirps Maple Leafs star players on national TV: ‘You’ve got guys in Toronto on milk cartons’

The NHL on TNT panel was in rare form on Thursday night as they had plenty of time to take jabs at one another during the sixth-longest game in NHL history between the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes. Game One of the Eastern Conference Finals produced six separate intermissions and several gold exchanges between the star-studded crew.

One of those exchanges came between Edmonton Oilers legend Wayne Gretzky and noted Toronto Maple Leafs sympathizer Paul Bissonnette. Biz Nasty sparked the conversation by first taking a dig at the Oilers’ top-heavy roster construction.

Evgeny Kuznetsov is very afraid of snakes. In a mystery box game, Biznasty teases he’s about to touch one.

The NHL has finally released video of Evgeny Kuznestov playing the “What’s in the Box?” game.

On NHL Media Day, former NHL player Paul Bissonnette (aka “Biznasty”) welcomed Kuznetsov into a room full of containers of reptiles, snakes, and other gross creepy-crawlys. Bissonnette then had Kuzy stick his hand into a box he couldn’t see into and asked him to guess what he was touching.

Biz leads players into thinking the box contains something that will bite, but in fact, the box’s contents are benign. This time around, it’s full of gummy worms. (Aka: not funny edible versions of evil snake creatures.)

Andre Burakovsky Scores Goal, Stares Down Paul Bissonnette (GIF)

Sunday in Bridgeport, CT, Washington Capitals prospect/guy-that-should-really-be-on-the-team-right-now Andre Burakovsky had a goal and an assist in the Hershey Bears’ 4-3 win over the Sound Tigers. The victory clinched a playoff spot for Hershey.

Former Coyotes enforcer Paul Bissonnette, who once looked like this, opened up to Kings blog Mayor’s Manor on Wednesday about his difficult offseason. Biznasty, who The Washington Post’s Alex Prewitt reported in August was close to signing with Washington, confirms that yeah, that totally was the plan, except the Caps couldn’t find the salary space to make it happen.

Bissonnete reveals that the Caps were trying to move veteran defenseman John Erskine to make room for him.

Evgeny Kuznetsov, John Carlson, Craig Laughlin, and Apparently Future-Cap Paul Bissonnette Complete Ice Bucket Challenge (GIF)

On Sunday, we posted a story about former Capital Mikhail Grabovski completing the Ice Bucket Challenge with Nikolai Kulemin in ridiculous fashion.

Since then, a bunch of money and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease) has been raised and the Ice Bucket Challenge has gone viral. At this point, if you haven’t done it yet– you’re a big weirdo.

Over the last 24 hours, a bunch of Caps people have completed the challenge. Since I’m guessing there will be more, we’ll be updating this post as they happen all day.

Phoenix Coyotes Pregame: Howl!

The Pre-Game: Oh Lordy, we hate being wrong. Especially if it involves Canada. What happened Saturday was nothing short of a national pantsing of the Caps on the equivalent of Canada’s national holiday (that admittedly comes once a week, and with lots of beer). We suspected it would be a high-scoring affair, but completely misread in which direction. Blah blah they were disconnected blither blather they weren’t moving their feet twiddle twaddle they weren’t chasing the pucks and so forth. Not my job to pick over Saturday night’s turkey carcass; others have done that far better. Let others pile on our Mustardy Coach. We’re looking forward to what’s being cooked up tonight.
