Alex Ovechkin passed Mike Gartner for seventh place on the NHL’s goals list Thursday in a losing effort against the New York Rangers.
Ovechkin scored off a faceoff late in the third period to bring the Capitals within one of New York.
Ultimately, the Capitals lost 4-2.
Alex Ovechkin was honored in a pregame ceremony by the Washington Capitals after scoring his 700th career goal Saturday against the Devils.
Ovechkin left the Capitals bench after an introduction video aired on the jumbotron and joined his son Sergei, his wife Nastya (who’s expecting baby number two), Capitals majority owner Ted Leonsis, president Dick Patrick, and NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly who were already on the ice.
By the end of the ceremony, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

After becoming the 143rd player ever to tally 500 assists, Alex Ovechkin became the third player ever with 30 goals to in each of his first 13 seasons.
Yeah. It was just that type of game for Ovi.
The NHL is celebrating its centennial year and to mark the occasion, a blue-ribbon panel chose the 100 greatest hockey players of all-time. Friday night at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was named to that list.

Olaf Kölzig spent 16 years as a Washington Capital — including six appearances as their goalie in the playoffs. He owns many of the franchise’s meaningful goalie records (GP, W, SO, Pts, SVs and SV%). Should the Caps honor the now-retired Kölzig by hoisting his jersey to the Verizon Center rafters?
