The Caps’ long losing streak is over and they did it without Alex Ovechkin and Lars Eller.

Five days ago, Nicklas Backstrom won a game in the final minute against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings, Backstrom did it again – this time scoring a game-tying goal with 16.7 seconds left. The tally completed a wild comeback.
According to Brett Connolly, the Caps played “pissed off” after an abysmal second period. Washington dominated in the third and Backstrom’s goal was the culmination of a lot of hard work.
Tuesday night at Nationwide Arena, Nicklas Backstrom scored his 200th career goal as a Capital. It was clutch.
Backstrom scored with 42.9 seconds left in the third period to give the Caps a thrilling 3-2 victory over division-rival Columbus.
Lars Eller has come to play this season. The Danish forward is on pace to top his single season career high in both goals and points.
His tenth goal of this season came late in the Caps 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, breathing life into the final minute before the buzzer eventually sounded.

When you think offense: you think Alex Ovechkin. When you think the perfect setup man: you think Nicklas Backstrom. When you think a crucial defensive zone face-off with under a minute left: you think Jay Beagle.
All three of these Caps players combined their powers to win right at the buzzer. It was unbelievable.
As it ramps up its promotion for the 2018 Winter Classic, the NHL is counting down the greatest Winter Classic moments of all time.
Wednesday, the NHL named Troy Brouwer’s game-winning goal with 12.9 seconds left in the 2015 Winter Classic as the fifth best moment.
Eight games into his NHL career (which feels absolutely appropriate), Evgeny Kuznetsov has scored the first goal of his NHL career. It was a big one.
With under a minute to go and with the Caps shorthanded and with their goalie pulled, Kuznetsov whacked Alex Ovechkin‘s rebound past Jonathan Quick. That goal tied the Los Angeles Kings and Washington Capitals at 4. It unleashed a raucous celebration in Verizon Center. And it gave the Caps one very badly needing standings point. Call it clutch.
Kuznetsov now has six points in his eight games as an NHL player. I don’t know about you, but so far he looks to me like he has the potential to be a superstar in this league. This dirty goal was just a taste.
Now onto the media extravaganza!

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin had himself a pretty ordinary game against the Detroit Red Wings Friday. Well, that is until the 60th minute of play. That’s when Ovi summoned the combined powers of Hercules, Paul Bunyan, and one of those unscrewable pickle jar lids and used it to tie the game with seven seconds left to go in regulation.
As John Carlson laid a perfect pass into Ovechkin’s wheelhouse, the Russian machine wound up and fired from the point. His one-timer beat Jimmy Howard stick side. Yeaaaaaa, BOI!

And you thought Wednesday was great.
Tell me if you’ve heard this before. In the final minute of the Washington Capitals game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Alex Ovechkin tied the game with less than a minute to go, sending the Verizon Center into a frenzy.
The Capitals, down 4-1 to the Flyers in the third period, scored three unanswered goals in the game’s final 8:40 to push the game to overtime. The Caps eventually won in the shootout.
