Evgeny Kuznetsov attends grand opening of new Cheylabinsk hockey rink, suits up as goaltender to kids’ delight

Evgeny Kuznetsov was back on the ice on Friday, but not to train for next season. The 28-year-old, Stanley Cup-winning center threw on his goaltending gear at the grand opening of an outdoor hockey rink in his hometown of Chelyabinsk, Russia.

Kuznetsov, wearing a redesigned Traktor Chelyabinsk jersey he received from the team in late October and a red beanie, cut a ribbon marking the official opening of the rink.

Kuzy also signed autographs and held a master class with dozens of kids from the Valery Belousov Educational Center. Belousov passed away in 2015 and was Kuznetsov’s former KHL coach and a close mentor.

Evgeny Kuznetsov suits up as goaltender during practice (Video)

Braden Holtby better watch his back, because Evgeny Kuznetsov is coming for his starter’s spot. During practice on Thursday morning, the forward swapped his usual gear for goalie pads for about 20 minutes, taking shots from Philipp Grubauer and Dmitry Orlov.

Evgeny Kuznetsov makes incredible saves after practice, should probably be the new starting goaltender

Saturday at the conclusion of practice, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Devante Smith-Pelly, Madison Bowey, and Nathan Walker were gathering loose pucks on the ice.

According to reader Gene Wu, Kuznetsov moved the goal off its moorings and to the back boards. And then something amazing happened.

Kuznetsov showed off his incredible goalie skillz.
