Kendall Coyne Schofield to join San Jose Sharks broadcast team as color commentator for select games

In addition to being the first-ever woman to compete in the NHL All-Star skills competition, Olympic gold medallist, five-time IIHF Worlds Championships gold medalist, and Isobel Cup champion in the NWHL, Kendall Coyne Schofield can now add San Jose Sharks color commentator to her laundry list of accomplishments.

“I’ve always felt a part of the San Jose family since I left that moment,” Coyne Schofield told NBC Sports, referencing her time at the 2019 NHL All-Star weekend. “And everyone’s been so supportive, and the outreach from the San Jose community just to me as a hockey player has been unbelievable. So, I’m really excited to transition that into the broadcasting realm.”

Capitals players support women’s hockey: ‘It’s something that is on the rise’

Women’s hockey has been in a brighter spotlight in recent weeks with the inclusion of professional women’s players in the NHL’s All-Star weekend in San Jose, CA and the NWHL’s All-Star weekend in Nashville, TN. But women’s hockey has been thriving and growing in the USA at an impressive rate for a long time.

USA Hockey’s public registration numbers show a nearly five percent increase in women’s hockey in 2017-18, compared to only one percent increase in men’s. Men’s hockey still has larger numbers overall, but the difference in the rate of growth reflects a change in the broader nature of hockey in the USA.

We spoke with some Washington Capitals players about the importance of women’s hockey during the team’s “Hockey ‘n Heels” event.

Pierre McGuire issues statement after cringeworthy treatment of Kendall Coyne Schofield

NBC hockey analyst Pierre McGuire issued a short statement Thursday after receiving vast criticism online for mansplaining hockey to gold medalist Kendall Coyne Schofield.

Coyne contributed to NBCSN’s coverage of the Pittsburgh Penguins-Tampa Bay Lightning game Wednesday night, serving as an analyst inside the glass and in the booth.

The Emmy-winning sports reporter expressed regret but did not apologize for his actions, saying that he “should have chosen my words better.”

Pierre McGuire mansplains hockey to six-time world champion Kendall Coyne Schofield

Kendall Coyne Schofield has won five gold medals at the IIHF world championships, one Olympic silver, one Olympic gold, and one Patty Kazmaier Award for being the best collegiate hockey player in the country. Last week she became the first woman to participate in the NHL’s skills competition at the All-Star Game.

And on Wednesday night, Pierre McGuire felt he needed to tell her which team was on which side of the ice.

Kendall Coyne Schofield impresses as first woman to compete in NHL All-Star skills competition

Kendall Coyne Schofield’s resume was already a long one. She won silver with the USA women’s hockey team at the 2014 Olympics and then brought home the gold in 2018. Tack on six world championship medals–five gold, one silver–and you’ve got one of the best hockey players in the game.

Now Coyne Schofield can add another line item to that list: she is the first woman to compete in an NHL All-Star skills competition.

She and three other female Olympians were slated to demonstrate the various skills: Coyne Schofield’s USA teammate Brianna Decker and Canada’s Renata Fast and Rebecca Johnston.

Coyne Schofield was called into action when the Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon had to withdraw due to a bruised foot.

She finished seventh with a time of 14.346 seconds — one second behind Connor McDavid who won with a time of 13.378.
