That strange play where Evgeny Kuznetsov got high-sticked in the face by the Red Wings trainer

Evgeny Kuznetsov can be a strange bird all by himself, but his mere presence near the Detroit Red Wings bench during the third period caused a once-in-a-lifetime play to happen.

As Kuznetsov skated by, Detroit’s head equipment manager, Paul Boyer, tried to hand Dylan Larkin a new stick after the Red Wings forward had his slashed and broken in the offensive zone.

Boyer held the stick out for a few seconds and struck Kuznetsov in the face with the twig.

Jay Beagle gets high-sticked by teammate before game

Jay Beagle is not afraid to take a big hit to make a play – even if it means getting hit in the face for a high five.

The former Capital had the unfortunate luck of getting high-sticked while walking out for for the Canucks-Blackhawks game Wednesday night.

Brooks Orpik high sticks Cory Schneider in the head while skating by Devils bench

New Jersey Devils starting goaltender Cory Schneider may not have played Thursday against the Capitals, but he unwittingly found himself a part of the action during a second period power play.

As Brooks Orpik defended Marcus Johansson as he entered the zone, the Caps defenseman swung his stick and accidentally struck Schneider in the side of the head.

It was scary, but Cory would be okay.

Alex Ovechkin Takes Brutal High Stick, Bleeds (GIFs)

A few minutes into the first period of the Kraft Hockeyville game in Belleville, Ontario, Washington Capitals fans saw something they did not want to see: reigning MVP Alex Ovechkin crumpled on the ice in pain.

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Ben Chiarot caught Ovechkin in the face with a high stick as the Capitals captain skated through the neutral zone. The blade of Chiarot’s stick then got caught under Ovechkin’s shield and fell with Ovechkin to the ice. Ovi immediately skated off the ice bleeding from his nose and lip. Chiarot was given a double minor for high-sticking.
