A few minutes into the first period of the Kraft Hockeyville game in Belleville, Ontario, Washington Capitals fans saw something they did not want to see: reigning MVP Alex Ovechkin crumpled on the ice in pain.
Winnipeg Jets defenseman Ben Chiarot caught Ovechkin in the face with a high stick as the Capitals captain skated through the neutral zone. The blade of Chiarot’s stick then got caught under Ovechkin’s shield and fell with Ovechkin to the ice. Ovi immediately skated off the ice bleeding from his nose and lip. Chiarot was given a double minor for high-sticking.
Ovechkin came back to the ice less than 10 minutes later. Russian machine never breaks. Oh, you didn’t know?
But that’s literally the exact opposite of what the face shield was designed to do. Kinda dark GIFs below from me and my DVR.
Ouch.
