Connor McMichael won the World Junior Championship with Team Canada, Sunday.
The Capitals’ 2019 first-round pick scored a goal in the third period that helped Canada come back from a 3-1 hole against Russia.

The 2017 World Championship-winning Swedish national team arrived in the capital of their home country, Stockholm, to participate in a celebration at Sergels Torg, Monday. The location, which is located in the center of the city, drew thousands of Swedish hockey fans.
There was singing. There was chanting. And there were gold helmets. Lots and lots of metallic gold helmets.
Sunday night in Germany, Team Sweden won their first World Championship since 2013. After posing for a team picture and skating around the ice with the IIHF trophy, Team Sweden players retreated into the locker room where their celebration took a strange turn.
While wearing their gold medals, players jumped into a yellow-lit hot tub. The Avalanche’s Gabe Landeskog (above) seemed to be the most excited out of the crew, leaving all of his gear on.

When the Caps season ended, Nicklas Backstrom said he was going to Worlds to end his season on a good note. He got his wish on Sunday when Sweden defeated Canada in the shootout. Backstrom scored the first of two Swedish shootout goals.
After the game, Backstrom posed with his shirtless linemates, Leafs’ William Nylander and Rangers’ Oscar Lindberg, inside the victorious locker room.

After losing in the second round to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Nicklas Backstrom arrived in Cologne, Germany, a little over a week ago for the 2017 World Championship. Backstrom ended up centering one of the most dangerous lines of the tournament, made up of World Championship MVP William Nylander and Oscar Lindberg.
On Sunday, after tallying seven points in five games, Backstrom and Team Sweden won gold after defeating Canada 2-1 in a thrilling shootout. It was the first time Sweden has ever beat Canada in a World Championship gold medal game. It was the country’s first World Championship since 2013.
The NHL agreed last week to allow its players participate in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Up to eleven Washington Capitals could represent their countries in the two-week tournament, but the ultimate goal of Olympic gold just got a bit less awesome.
Chelyabinsk Region Culture Minister Alexei Betekhtin announced on Wednesday that gold medal winners on February 15th will receive a little something extra in their award: part of the meteor that crashed over the city a year before. According to R-Sport, only seven events will be awarding medals that day: the men’s 1,500 meter speedskating, the women’s 1,000m and men’s 1,500 short track, the women’s cross-country skiing relay, the men’s K-125 ski jump, the women’s super giant slalom, and the men’s skeleton events.
So no space rocks for hockey players.

Washington Capitals prospect Riley Barber and Team USA upset Filip Forsberg and Christian Djoos of the defending champion Team Sweden 3-1 on Saturday to win the 2013 World Junior Championships. This is the first time that the USA has won the tournament since 2010, when some guy named John Carlson scored in sudden-death overtime.
Team USA was led in the title game by John Gibson, named best goalie of the tournament with a .955 save percentage, and Rocco Grimaldi, who scored two goals. Former Caps defenseman Phil Housley, in his first year coaching Team USA, was the victorious head coach. Assistant Grant Potulny, who scored 19 goals in 50 games during the 2007-08 season for the Hershey Bears, also won gold as an assistant coach.

Alex Semin has been relatively quiet since joining the Russian national team for the World Championships, recording only assists in his two games played before the final gold-medal round. Semin showed up for Team Russia in a big way today, scoring twice and recording one assist to lead the team to a 6-2 win, securing their first World Championship gold medal since 2009.
