After scoring his 797th career goal, Alex Ovechkin put his name in the record books once again.
NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti reported on Twitter that Ovechkin’s streak of four empty-net goals in three games is history-making.

Who needs five-on-five and power-play goals when you can just shoot on an empty net?
Alex Ovechkin continued his empty-net goal tear against the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday. Ovechkin scored his fourth ENG in the last three games, putting an exclamation point on the Capitals’ 5-2 win. The Capitals are now on a four-game winning streak.
The goal was Ovechkin’s 797th goal of his career, putting him three away from the exclusive 800 goal milestone.

Ovi’s two goals helped seal the Capitals’ victory over the Flyers 4-1.
Though there was some drama on the second one.

Usually, it’s Alex Ovechkin making history. But Thursday, Conor Sheary made some of his own.
The Capitals’ Short King scored an empty-net goal with 12:39 remaining in the third period against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
According to SportsRadar and via an NBC Sports Washington article, Sheary’s uncontested goal was “the second-earliest empty netter scored in a third period in NHL history.”
Nic Dowd sealed the Capitals’ 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday, taking a pot shot at the Flyers’ empty net with 28 seconds left remaining in the game. At first, Dowd’s decision seemed ridiculous and perhaps unwise. Dowd launched a wrist shot from behind both Ilya Samsonov and the Capitals net, 185 feet away from the Flyers’ goal.
Dowd’s shot was perfect though and it went in. According to the checking-line center, this was all according to Peter Laviolette’s plan.

Nicklas Backstrom has a knack for always doing the right thing at the right time.
Tuesday, during the Capitals’ 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, Backstrom showed off his unselfishness once again by not wanting to score an empty-net goal. The Swedish center wanted to help his longtime teammate Alex Ovechkin get his 50th goal of the season.
NBC Sports Washington’s Craig Laughlin was the first to notice what happened.
This is getting ridiculous, but Tom Wilson scored again.
Clinging to a 4-3 late in the third period, the Capitals first-linger winger scored an empty-net goal with 1:08 remaining to ice the game for the Capitals.
But it was how he scored that was so remarkable.
Alex Ovechkin is on fire this season and here’s another example.
Thursday night in Boston, the Russian machine was on the ice in the third period while the Bruins had their goalie pulled. After gathering in a chip up the boards by Matt Niskanen, Ovechkin looked to hit Tom Wilson on the opposite wing with a pass.
Ovi’s pass was terrible, but instead of harmlessly caroming down the ice, the puck went into the Bruins net.
