Cooking With The Caps cookbook to be released on March 4

In the early 1990’s the Capitals released Capital Cuisine, a cookbook of recipes compiled by the team’s players and staff. Last March, the Capitals once again announced that they were putting together Cooking With the Caps, another cookbook compiled by the team’s players, coaches, staff, and the team caterer.

Unforeseen circumstances caused said cookbook to be put on hiatus, with an unknown return time. Monday afternoon the Caps announced that the Cooking With The Caps cookbook is finally ready to be released! The books will debut at the Verizon Center on Saturday March 4, with all the proceeds benefiting DC Central Kitchen.

Cooking With The Caps: The Caps Are Releasing Their Own Cookbook Again

Around the start of 2016, RMNB introduced you to the 1991 Hartford Whalers cookbook. And then shortly after, we introduced you to Capital Cuisine, a cookbook from the same era released by the Capitals. One of our readers even made Dale Hunter’s cookie recipe!

Twenty-five years later, we’ve come full circle. The 2015-16 Capitals are coming out with their very own book of culinary delights: Cooking with the Caps.

Another Culinary Hockey Nostalgia Bomb: Capital Cuisine

Earlier this month, we introduced you to the Hartford Whalers 1990-91 cookbook, a Christmas gift given to comedian John Hodgman. When reader John F. saw that story, he was kind enough to to send us another hockey cookbook from his own collection: Capital Cuisine.

Like the Hartford cookbook, Capital Cuisine looks to have been printed around 1992. Apparently “Hockey Dudes Cooking Foods” was a trend back then (a quick Google search shows that Philadelphia and Vancouver also published similar projects).

This cookbook gets everyone in on the action, from the players to the front office, and even then-owner Abe Pollin. Let’s take a closer look and see what these former Caps cooked up.

The 1991 Hartford Whalers Cookbook is a Hockey Nostalgia Bomb

Comedian John Hodgman received a very interesting piece of vintage hockey memorabilia for Christmas: A cookbook assembled by the wives of the 1990-91 Hartford Whalers.

Sorry loved ones. @markmcconville just trumped y’all in 2015 with this present I just opened. AND HE HELPED KIDS TO BOOT. Welcome home and happy new year to you all.

Between 1979 and 1997, the team now known to us as the Carolina Hurricanes Brass Bonanza’d it up in the Nutmeg State (and taught us all how bad a head coach Pierre McGuire could be). This cookbook is a cozy look at the team and their families, but it’s also a hockey nostalgia bomb, a warp tunnel to the NHL of old, full of mustaches and tips for juicing lemons.
