Now that was fun. The Washington Capitals went into Pittsburgh and stole Game Three from the Penguins 4-3 with a very late Alex Ovechkin tally after an overall tremendous third period effort. Two more times please, boys.
The Capitals and Penguins both recorded 22 shots on goal, but the Caps won the five-on-five shot attempts battle 34 to 32.

Tuesday was a pretty great night for D.C. sports. After the Nats trolled Pittsburgh sports fans with Caps-themed ticket promotion, both Washington teams came out on top over teams from the Steel City. The Capitals, in a hard-fought Game Three of their second-round series against the Penguins, won 4-3 on a late Alex Ovechkin goal, while Bryce Harper and the Nationals rolled the Pirates, 12-4.
Many Nationals, including manager Davey Martinez, pitcher Max Scherzer, and Harper, proudly show their support for Capitals, going to games and wearing gear. That support was ratcheted up to 11 Tuesday.

Game Three of the Caps and Penguins second-round series had just about everything a hockey fan could want: big saves, epic momentum shifts, and a late game-winning goal. It also had tension. Lots of tension.
Those hard feelings boiled over for the second straight game, as a borderline Tom Wilson hit left a Penguins player injured. While Brian Dumoulin returned Tuesday for Pittsburgh after the Game Two collision that took him out of action, Zach Aston-Reese will not be so lucky.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored one of the biggest goals of his career Tuesday night at PPG Paints Arena.
With 67 seconds remaining in the third period, the Russian machine batted a rebound out of the air past Penguins goaltender Matt Murray to give the Caps a 4-3 win in Game Three. The victory also gave the Caps a 2-1 series lead over the Penguins.
As Ovechkin skated over to the glass to celebrate his league-leading eighth playoff goal, Penguins fans gave one of the greatest players of all-time a classless salute.
Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom teamed up to score the game-winning goal with 67 seconds left on the clock, locking up Game Three for Washington and giving the Caps a 2-1 series lead.
Game Three was a full plate. The Caps downed the Penguins in regulation (thank goodness), but so very much happened and I simply cannot wait to talk about it with you.
For the third time in as many games, the Caps took an early lead – this time thanks to John Carlson on the power play. The Penguins responded with two goals on two shots in two minutes and change: a Jake Guentzel tip-in and Patric Hornqvist’s streak-snapping power-play marker. Chandler Stephenson tied the game after some Tom Wilson drama, but Sidney Crosby restored the Penguins’ lead during 4-on-4 play heading into the second intermission.
Matt Niskanen knotted the score five minutes into the third period with a monster slapshot that beat Murray low glove-side. Then, with just over a minute left in rego, Nick Backstrom fed Alex Ovechkin for a perfect game-winner.

The Washington Capitals have tied the series up and are now in Pittsburgh to play Game Three tonight. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit nervous, not for the results, but for how Pittsburgh suddenly has this “revenge” mentality since Tom Wilson didn’t get a hearing on a controversial call last game. It’s gross, but whatever.
Keep your eyes peeled for some possible last minute line changes on the Penguins side. Evgeni Malkin, Brian Dumoulin, and Carl Hagelin will all be game-time decisions. Signs are currently pointing to Malkin and Dumoulin being good to go.
The puck will drop a tad after 7:30PM and you can find the game on NBCSN. Peter will, of course, have your recap ready.
