The Washington Capitals downed the Montreal Canadiens 6-4 in a game where offense was king and defense was forgotten for large stretches of the action.
The Caps out-shot the Canadiens 30 to 21 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 43 to 36.

Don Cherry flowed out of a volcano Saturday night to deliver his latest edition of Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night In Canada.
With the Caps and Habs featured, Cherry had some kind things to say about Tom Wilson after the Caps forward’s two-goal first period.
Tom Wilson and Evgeny Kuznetsov had two goals each, but it was Nicklas Backstrom who was the Caps MVP against the Habs Saturday.
The Swedish center collected four assists — three of which came in the first period — in the Capitals’ 6-4 win over Montreal. All four were primary assists.
The game marked Backstrom’s 11th career four-assist game. It’s the most among active NHL players.
The famed Bell Centre is always a fantastic venue for a hockey game and the Washington Capitals met the Montreal Canadiens there tonight in an Eastern Conference battle. The Caps offense took advantage of a very banged up, very bad Habs team.
Alex Galchenyuk capitalized on a defensive zone giveaway to open the scoring. Evgeny Kuznetsov in his first game back from injury tied things up on the power play. Tom Wilson struck twice in quick succession to give the Caps the lead.
Jay Beagle tapped home his seventh of the season to extend the advantage further. Charles Hudon put in a high deflection with one second left in the second period. Kuznetsov added another power play marker in the third and TJ Oshie deflected one more home. Hudon again. Drouin added a late one.

The Capitals started sloppy against the Montreal Canadiens, but after a successful offside goal review by Barry Trotz, the Capitals found their sea legs.
“Any time you can get a goal back off the board that’s huge,” Tom Wilson said at intermission. “We got a great staff – Stretch and Timmy in there that got on the microphone. Barry and the coaching staff did the rest.”
First-line forwards Tom Wilson and Nicklas Backstrom then led the way. Wilson had two goals and Backstrom had three assists in a dominant first period that saw the team go into the first intermission with a 3-1 lead.

After taking a beautiful breakout pass by Michal Kempny at center ice, the Russian machine ambled in on Carey Price all alone on a breakaway.
He fell down, but the play didn’t end there.
On Friday, the Capitals signed prospect Shane Gersich to a two-year entry-level contract. Gersich immediately joined the team in Montreal for dinner on Friday night, and participated in Saturday’s morning skate.
Following morning skate, Gersich spoke to the media about his decision to leave the University of North Dakota early and turn pro.
“You give it a little bit of thought and you weigh your options,” Gersich said. “But at the end of the day, I wanted to be a pro hockey player. That was my dream when I went to North Dakota. So, I thought I’d take that opportunity.”

Evgeny Kuznetsov suffered an upper body injury during the Capitals clash with the New York Islanders on March 16. Barry Trotz was quick to confirm that he would return before the playoffs, and Kuznetsov continued skating at practice.
At morning skate, ahead of their game against Montreal Canadiens, Kuznetsov announced that he would be playing in the most Kuzy way possible.
