The NHL has credited Nick Backstrom with a goal that was previously Kevin Shattenkirk’s

Tuesday night, the Caps scored a goal against the Calgary Flames that the NHL credited as Kevin Shattenkirk’s first as a Washington Capital. We broke down the video like the Zapruder film and suggested that Nicklas Backstrom may have gotten a piece of it at the last second. Well, upon further review it seems the NHL is in agreement:

We’ll have to wait a little longer to see Shattenkirk’s first goal as a Washington Capital, but in the meantime we can bask in the glorious season that Backstrom is having.

Caps defeat the Flames to stay atop the Metro: numbers for the morning after

Tuesday night the Caps beat the Calgary Flames 4-2 and narrowly maintained their hold on the Metropolitan Division with Pittsburgh hot on their heels. This game was entertaining from start to finish, and it featured Kevin Shattenkirk’s first goal as a Capital as well as an 11-shot Alex Ovechkin charge that ended with a PP snipe on Flames netminder Brian Elliott.

The final five-on-five shot attempt tally was 55 to 49 in favor of the Caps, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Five minutes into the third period, shot attempts were 53 to 32 in favor of the Caps. Scoring chances were also lopsided through the first two periods, with the Caps entering the second intermission up 22 to 14 in that statistic.

Alex Ovechkin scores on his 11th shot of the night

Once upon a time, Alex Ovechkin took more shots than anyone in the league. Now Brent Burns holds that title, and the buzz is that Ovi has lost a step. On Tuesday night, the Great Eight heard that buzz and did something about it.

He had put 10 shots on net, but none beat Calgary goalie Brian Elliott. But then a late game penalty gave him one more shot, and Ovi decided he was not gonna blow his … shot.

Cool the Flames: Caps win 4-2

The Calgary Flames came to town on Tuesday and boy have they been…hot. Winners of 12 of their last 13 games, the Flames have been giving teams around the league fits recently.

The Caps opened the scoring after Andre “Dre” Burakovsky stripped Johnny “fancy pants” Gaudreau in the neutral zone and then fed Evgeny Kuznetsov for a pretty goal. The lead didn’t last long as some miscommunication in the Caps defensive zone allowed Sean Monahan to tie the game at one with a snipe.

The second period was uneventful until it wasn’t. TJ Oshie scored his 30th goal of the season to put the Caps up 2-1. Just before the buzzer, Kevin Shattenkirk was credited with the PP goal to put the good guys up 3-1, but it sure looked like Nick Backstrom touched it.

In the third, the Caps had some more issues in the defensive zone that led to a goal by some guy named Troy Brouwer. Alex Ovechkin fired the biscuit all night and was rewarded with a late PP goal.

Someone scored, don’t know who, doesn’t matter, teamwork makes the dream work

The Washington Capitals started sluggish but found their spirit late in the second period. TJ Oshie scored his 30th goal of the season, then, right before the buzzer for the second intermission, a trio of Caps swarmed the net to make it 3-1.

Whose goal it is matters, but not a whole lot, right?

Caps vs. Flames pregame: Locked in

The Capitals are hosting the Calgary Flames tonight, who are hungry for a playoff spot (can’t relate). They’re also red-hot, having won 12 of their last 13. Goaltender Brian Elliott has 11 straight wins to his name.

Tonight’s match-up is the first of a three-game homestand for the Caps. With the roster intact and a trip to the postseason officially in the books, Barry Trotz has yet to alter his lines. Yes, that means the continued presence of Nate Schmidt in the press box.
