The Washington Capitals met up with the only team that they are chasing in the Metropolitan Division standings in the Islanders and took down those Isles 3-1. That’s opening March on the right path and long may it continue.
The Caps out-shot the Isles 29 to 21.

Alex Ovechkin set a new NHL record at Nassau Coliseum Friday night.
Ovechkin scored his 45th goal of the season. According to the Capitals PR, the Russian machine now has 10 career 45 goal seasons, more than any other player in NHL history.
The goal stood up as the game-winning goal – the 106th of his career.
Ovechkin’s goal came on the powerplay and it was a rare non-Ovi-Spot tally.

The Washington Capitals controlled play well on Friday night but couldn’t seem to crack the net of Isles goalie Thomas Greiss.
That is — until Jakub Vrana had a hero moment in front of his old coach.
The Washington Capitals have recently struggled to hold on to leads in six-on-five, empty-net situations.
That was not a problem on Friday night, when New York’s Josh Bailey beefed it hardcore, scoring an own-goal that will haunt his dreams until his dying day. Probably.

The Washington Capitals entered the raucous concrete lump that was once known as Nassau Coliseum to play the surging New York Islanders and boy did this game feel like playoff time.
Tom Kuhnhackl “scored” to give the Islanders an early 1-0 lead. Got noothing for ya from the second. Jakub Vrana tied things up in tight in the third and Alex Ovechkin gave the Caps a lead on a power play shortly after.
Josh Bailey literally scored an own goal.

The New York Islanders took a 1-0 lead over the Capitals less than three minutes into the game.
Except upon replay, Tom Kuhnhackl’s breakaway goal probably should not have counted because the Islanders were offside.
An obscure rule prevented the Capitals from challenging.
The Capitals are back on the road and they’re headed up north to face off against the New York Islanders. The Islanders are coming off a 6-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs (not to mention an absurd meltdown). Hopefully, they’re still tired since the game was only 24 hours ago.
There is nothing more I want in this world than to have a nice cocktail and watch the Capitals win in Long Island. Say your prayers, light your candles, do your lucky dance, or whatever you need for the good ~vibes.
