Alex Ovechkin set a new NHL record at Nassau Coliseum Friday night.
Ovechkin scored his 45th goal of the season. According to the Capitals PR, the Russian machine now has 10 career 45 goal seasons, more than any other player in NHL history.
The goal stood up as the game-winning goal – the 106th of his career.
Ovechkin’s goal came on the powerplay and it was a rare non-Ovi-Spot tally.
The Caps got their first powerplay of the game in the third period. It only took them 12 seconds to convert.
After TJ Oshie won an offensive zone faceoff, the Capitals cycled the puck down low. Evgeny Kuznetsov fed a quick pass to TJ Oshie in the slot for a one-timer. Thomas Greiss made the initial save but left a juicy rebound in the crease. Kuznetsov got his stick on the puck first, knocking the puck into the air. Ovechkin whacked at the airborne biscuit and this was the silly result.
The puck flew high into the air and fell behind Greiss and into the back of the net. What a bounce.
Ovechkin’s goal came 1:08 after Jakub Vrana’s tally that tied the game 1-1. The Capitals would hang on to win 3-1.
Ovechking slammed into the glass to celebrate.
“He continues to amaze the players in the room and our coaching staff,” Capitals head coach Todd Reirden said after the game. “I’ve said it a lot this year – we are just so lucky to have this player in our organization. He’s a generational talent in the National Hockey League. The National Hockey League is fortunate that a player like him has been able to come over and do the things that he did. You’re always looking for people that are special. Special talents like he is and to able to have 10 seasons of 45 goals is absolutely amazing.”
