The Washington Capitals had a whole lot of trouble getting much going against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night. By the time they did, there was not enough time left in regulation to make up the full difference as they dropped the away match 5-3.
This one was not fun to watch.

The Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers did battle on Wednesday night in Philly as the two teams kicked off a two-game, home and home set. Games between the Flyers and Caps always have the chance to get spicy, but would this one?
Scott Laughton opened the scoring with a lofted strike through traffic on a power play. Garnet Hathaway scored in the McNugget minute to tie things up but the Caps left Travis Konecny uncovered in front of their net and he gave the Flyers their lead back less than 30 seconds later.
We got nothing in the second. Owen Tippett rocketed home a wrister in the third to extend the home team’s lead. Konecny got another shorthanded. Marcus Johansson and TJ Oshie went back-to-back to get the Caps right back into it. Konecny empty netter for a hat trick.
Flyers beat Capitals 5-3.

The Washington Capitals are back after making us three long days. The Caps will continue their January jaunt through weaker opponents with a matchup against the lowly Philadelphia Flyers. The Capitals are coming off a 1-0 shutout victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets where the team lacked chemistry as it re-integrated Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson back in the lineup.
Game Two of the 19 & 43 will see the Capitals with wildly different lines, which includes Lars Eller on the wing.
With a victory, the Capitals will extend their franchise-best road winning streak to eight.
NBC Sports Washington Plus will air the game. The opening faceoff will be a little after 7 pm.
