Thursday night, the Washington Capitals took their guarantee to #TheBank, cashing in on two points from the Columbus Blue Jackets. The players weren’t the only members of the organization to make a transaction that night.
RMNB reader Laura R. reports that Caps owner Ted Leonsis made a withdrawal of his own. A literal one. Like, at an ATM.
Nate Schmidt is a great hockey player who should play in every Capitals game. Recently, however, ya boy Smitty has been scratched for Taylor Chorney, after the latter scored the game-winning tally in the Capitals’ New Year’s Day victory.
Well, time to put down the Chorn Horn and ride Schmidt Scooter to Goaltown, USA.
On Thursday night, the Capitals broke the Columbus Blue Jackets’ 16-game winning streak, stopping them from tying the NHL record for most wins in a single season. More importantly, defenseman Jesus Schmidt scored his first goal since January 7, 2016.
“It’s been weighing on me,” Schmidt said when I asked him about his recent rough road, with two straight healthy scratches. He then laughed heartily at his misfortunate. “It’s been a little tough lately. You just got to stick with it. … When they call your name, just be ready!”

On Tuesday, Washington Capitals goaltender Philipp Grubauer led the Capitals to a nail-biting 6-5 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs after replacing a shaky Braden Holtby in the first period. On Thursday, however, Grubauer never came to mind, as Holtby managed a brilliant shutout against the Columbus Blue Jackets, who were going for an NHL record 17-straight wins in a single season. In fact, Grubauer wasn’t even on the bench most of the game.
“He was fine this morning, and then on his way here, he wasn’t feeling so good,” Caps head coach Barry Trotz said after the game. “We kept him in the back room. He was getting pumped full of fluids and stuff.”

On Thursday night, the Washington Capitals stopped history in its tracks when they ended the Columbus Blue Jackets 16-game streak with a 5-0 victory.
While the win was certainly exciting, Nate Schmidt was the most entertaining part of the night. Schmidt scored his first goal in 67 games to extend the Caps lead to 3-0. He also sung and danced to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It off” in a video shown during the second period.

Thursday night, the Washington Capitals destroyed Columbus 5-0 at Verizon Center, ending the Blue Jackets’ winning streak at 16 games. While Columbus players and coaches were frustrated to miss out on history, no one took tonight’s loss harder than the Blue Jackets’ Twitter account.
DING DONG the streak is dead. The Blue Jackets came to town and were met very rudely by your Washington Capitals in their fancy home alternate jerseys. In a game that started with a playoff-like feel, your Caps had a chance to put an end to the biggest story of the NHL season so far. They did just that, stopping Columbus’ attempt to tie the NHL record of winning 17 games in a row set by the 1993 Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Caps came out strong, limiting the Blue Jackets to only one or two real chances and putting two goals past Sergei Bobrovsky. Daniel Winnik struck first, converging on a net front scramble and John Carlson deflected a Marcus Johansson pass off of his skate and past the Russian netminder to make the game 2-0.
In very Bachman–Turner Overdrive fashion, “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” the Caps followed up a strong first period with an even better second. They doubled their lead with strikes coming from Nate Schmidt and Andre Burakovsky. 4-0 after two.
The Caps weren’t done there. In the third, Justin Williams would continue his hot streak with a top shelf dart to make it 5-0 and remove Sergei Bobrovsky from the game. Braden Holtby with the shutout, ho-hum. BAILAMOS!

Earlier on Thursday, teen idol Andre Burakovsky had a bold prediction for the evening’s Blue Jackets game. “It’s going to be a really fun moment for us to end it,” Yung Dre said of Columbus’s nearly historical winning streak.
Then Burakovsky put his hockey stick where his mouth is.
The Columbus Blue Jackets have a 16-game winning streak. It’s about to end.
After Andre Burakovsky scored to put the Caps up 4-0, CSN Mid-Atlantic cameras panned to the crowd where one Caps fan held up a special sign.
“Hey Blue Jackets, streaking is not allowed in here,” it read.
Heading into tonight’s game, the Columbus Blue Jackets have been unbeatable, winning 16-straight games. It’s the second longest winning streak in NHL history – one short of Pittsburgh’s 17-game mark that they set during the 1992-93 season. Columbus could tie the all-time record with a win in Washington.
This game is going to be lit. Not only is this a match-up of two elite NHL teams in the same division and two Vezina Trophy winning netminders, but there are also some serious stakes at hand. The Jackets come to town looking to tie the NHL’s longest win streak of 17 games and give themselves a shot at breaking the record set by the 1993 Pittsburgh Penguins. Caps and Jackets games are normally chippy so strap in.
