The Washington Capitals took a quick trip down to North Carolina and met up with their good pals in the Carolina Hurricanes. The road squad left the happier side as they slew the Hurricanes 4-3.
The Canes out-shot the Caps 41 to 29 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 52 to 33.

Friday, Washington Capitals goaltender Ilya Samsonov became the first goalie in NHL history to win his first eight career road games (in a single season). Sammy made a career-high 38 saves, including 18 in the first period, to give the Caps their first victory of the year over the Carolina Hurricanes – the same team that dismissed them in the first round last season.
After the game, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Samsonov’s closest friend on the team, spoke to members of the press and demanded that they cover Sammy’s greatness more.
You don’t “[b]ecause he is Russian, right?”
Ilya Samsonov made a career-high 38 saves against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. Sammy’s big night helped push the Washington Capitals to a 4-3 win over their division rival. He was also named first star of the night.
From going to the splits to jumping in the air to block pucks with his face, the Russian netminder was spectacular from start to finish. And with his performance, he set a new NHL record.
Samsonov is the first goaltender in NHL history to win each of his first eight career road games in one season.
The Washington Capitals played a darn fun game of hockey against the hosting Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night. This rivalry gets better every time.
After a scoreless first period, the Caps made progress int he second. First, Richard Panik got a funky goal up front, then Evgeny Kuznetsov got a lovely layup after John Carlson faked a shot during a power play.
Jordan Staal ended Samsonov’s shutout bid early in the third period. Lars Eller extended Washington’s lead with a rebound off Ovechkin’s slapshot. Jakub Vrana finished off a good drive to score for the first time in a while. Teuvo Teravainen and Ryan Dzingel responded with two power-play goals to make it 4-3. It was close, but the Caps held on.

Evgeny Kuznetsov has four goals in his last three games after connecting on a second period powerplay.
Kuzy redirected a perfect pass from John Carlson to the back of the net to give the Caps a 2-0 lead.
New dad Nic Dowd has been assessed a 10-minute misconduct penalty for throwing Andrei Svechnikov’s stick into the audience at the end of Friday’s game in Carolina.
Hahaha.
Ilya Samsonov is making his 15th career appearance Friday night in Carolina, and it appears he’s starting to get comfortable in his role.
He made 18 saves in the first period, including this one — which appears to have been made with his mask.
The Washington Capitals were in Raleigh Friday to play the Carolina Hurricanes. During warmups, Evgeny Kuznetsov noticed a tiny Caps fan trying to take a selfie with the players skating in the background.
Instead of being a passive participant in the photo, Kuzy skated right on over to the glass to give the blonde-haired Caps supporter a keepsake he’d treasure forever.
The Capitals will welcome in 2020 in Raleigh to take on a recent playoff foe in the Carolina Hurricanes.
