The worst team in the entire league hands the Caps a sixth regulation loss in a row: Ducks beat Caps 4-2

The Washington Capitals and Anaheim Ducks squared off at Capital One Arena on Thursday but you can’t fault any Caps fan that had their attention elsewhere. The Caps made their first big move of the season to indicate they are likely sellers at this year’s deadline and writing off this season.

While that can be seen as a hopeful move for some, no matter what it is not fun to see our favorite players playing in a different jersey.

TJ Oshie deftly tipped home an Erik Gustafsson point drive for a rare Caps power-play goal to open the scoring. Isac Lundestrom finished off a breakaway to tie the game up. Nick Jensen made a power move to the net to put the Caps back up. The Ducks piled up in the crease and somehow put the puck in to tie the game once more.

Jakob Silfverberg snapped Anaheim into their first lead early in the third. Derek Grant empty netter.

Ducks beat Caps 4-2.

Caps lose again

The Caps lost again. This time it was to the Detroit Red Wings, a team that suddenly includes Jakub Vrana again.

Detroit defender Robert Hagg fired a shot from the slot that Trevor van Riemsdyk aided on its path to the net. A shorthanded goal by Pius Suter made it 2-0 for the Wings, but Tom Wilson’s tip-in got the Caps on the board at least.

The Caps pressed early in the third but Suter’s second goal of the night sealed the deal.

Caps lose 3-1. Their fifth loss in a row. A waste of your time.

Caps lose Stadium Series 4-1 to Canes, utterly pathetic

The Washington Capitals looked snazzy for their big outdoor game against the Carolina Hurricanes. But they played terribly. They got methodically dismantled by a superior team in front of 56,961 fans, a national TV audience, and some clown named Jake Owen.

Two minutes into the game, the Canes scored on their first shot: a deflection from Jesperi Kotkaniemi. The Canes scored three in the second period, starting with Paul Stastny all alone up front, middling with Martin Necas’ one-timer on the power, and lasting with Teuvo Teravainen on the rush.

The Caps played apocalyptically bad in the third period, but Tom Wilson got a goal from no-angle to crack the shutout.

Caps lose 4-1. Awful.

Panthers pull away from Caps and earn two very key playoff race points: Panthers beat Caps 6-3

The Washington Capitals hosted the Florida Panthers on Thursday night in an incredibly important game when it comes to figuring out the Eastern Conference playoff picture. The winner of the game would situate themselves in a much better position for the second Wild Card spot.

Gustav Forsling snapped the Panthers into a lead halfway through the first. Marc Staal doubled the Florida lead with a point drive and Colin White made it 3-0 with a nice backhand move.

Dylan Strome got the Caps on the board with a nifty tip-in late in the second. Aleksander Barkov killed any hope that goal gave the Caps with one of his own right after. Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov with late power play markers. Anton Lundell and Sam Reinhart empty netters.

Panthers beat Caps 6-3.

No goals, no fun: Canes beat Caps 3-2

Missing their sweetheart Alex Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals hosted the Carolina Hurricanes to a romantic evening of dating, discussion, and more.

Brent Burns was our first scorer, threading through traffic to put the Canes up 1-0. TJ Oshie scored in the final minute of the first period, taking a great pass from call-up Joe Snively.

In the second, Paul Stastny got a lucky bounce to restore Carolina’s lead, which Joe Snively nullified with a rush goal, but then Brady Skjei’s deflection made it 3-2 Carolina after two.

The Caps sorta scored in the third, but it got called back. So once again they were held to less than three goals, which usually means tonight’s result: Caps lose.

Slapped up by the Sharks on Super Bowl Sunday: Sharks beat Caps 4-1

The Washington Capitals managed to get all the way to February without playing the San Jose Sharks. Which team would come out the victor in their first matchup of the campaign?

Evgeny Svechnikov opened the scoring on the Sharks’ first shot of the game. Alexander Barabanov doubled the lead in the second with a power-play strike. Evgeny Kuznetsov got the Caps on the board late in the second. Erik Karlsson lofted one in to extend the lead back to two. Tomas Hertl empty netter.

Sharks beat Caps 4-1.

Massive road win: Caps beat Bruins 2-1

The Washington Capitals returned from ten days of rest to face the most fearsome team in the league, the Boston Bruins. Despite mild expectations, the Capitals dug deep to beat the big bad Bs.

Nicklas Backstrom got a greasy goal from the paint during a five-on-three, then Garnet Hathaway wristed from the slot to make it 2-0. Boston’s Nick Foligno cut that lead in half late in the second period, taking a genius pass from Connor Clifton.

Caps win!

Ready for vacay: Caps beat Blue Jackets 4-3

The Washington Capitals were so ready for the all-star break, but they had this one last road game against the Columbus Blue Jackets in their way. That’s okay, it’s just Columbus. They’re terrible, right?

Right?!

Garnet Hathaway tipped Lars Eller’s shot to give Washington an early lead, which Trevor van Riemsdyk extended with a blue-line bomb. That two-goal lead lasted 12 seconds, which is when Andrew Peeke needed two deflections to beat Washington goalie Charlie Lindgren.

Trevor van Riemsdyk received a great pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov to restore the Caps’ two-goal lead, but it didn’t last long – Eric Robinson smoked TJ Oshie’s line to score on the rush.

Johnny Gaudreau knotted the game at three goals with seven minutes left. The Jackets pushed late, but the Caps survived through regulation. Kuznetsov scored 26 seconds into overtime, thanks to a great setup from Johansson.

Caps win!

Dud: Leafs beat Caps 5-1

The Washington Capitals got pretty well throttled by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday evening.

Although Nicklas Backstrom kicked us off with a power-play goal in the first, the Leafs piled on four goals in the second period: Michael Bunting on the power play, Morgan Rielly for his first of the season, William Nylander on a rush, and finally Pierre Engvall chasing Darcy Kuemper from the net.

Zach Aston-Reese finished ’em off in the third period.

Caps lose.

Finding a way to finally get it done: Caps beat Penguins 3-2 (SO)

The Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins did rivalry night battle for just the second time this season on Thursday night. A pretty important two points were on the line as the Eastern Conference playoff picture is very tight around the Wild Card spots.

Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring with a casual one-time power play strike from his office. Danton Heinen slammed home a rebound to tie the game at one. Marcus Johansson absolutely ripped a wrister over Casey DeSmith’s glove to give the Caps their lead back. Bryan Rust equalized with around seven minutes left in the third.

The Pens survived an overtime Capitals power play so here are your shootout bullets:

Oshie did not put the biscuit in the basket
Rakell put the biscuit in the basket
Kuznetsov put the biscuit in the basket (in very slow motion)
Crosby did not put the biscuit in the basket
Backstrom put the biscuit in the basket
Malkin did not put the biscuit in the basket

Caps win 3-2 in a shootout!
