A hat trick, fights, and another loss: Wild beat Caps 5-3

The Washington Capitals made the trip up to Minnesota to take on another of the NHL’s Central Division teams in the Wild. The Caps were hoping to get a better result than they did against the Blues at home on Friday.

Matt Boldy scored with less than a minute gone to open the scoring. Boldy struck again soon after to double Minnesota’s lead. Alex Ovechkin from his office with a blast past forever nemesis Marc-Andre Fleury cut the lead in half. Ryan Reaves got the two-goal advantage back with a deflection.

Brandon Duhaime made it four. Ovi potted another. Boldy completed his hat trick. Dylan Strome added one more.

Wild beat Caps 5-3.

Caps all over the place in messy defeat to cross-conference St. Louis: Blues beat Caps 5-2

The St. Louis Blues were in town on Friday night and it was an “important” game according to Caps head coach Peter Laviolette. Would his players respond to the occasion?

Sammy Blais struck very early on to give St. Louis a first-period lead. Jordan Kyrou doubled that lead on a breakaway. Kasperi Kapenen and Blais added two more in the second to make it four for the visitors.

Martin Fehervary finished off a pretty pass from Alex Alexeyev to get the Caps on the board. Nicklas Backstrom doubled the Caps total very late in the third. Brayden Schenn empty netter.

Blues beat Caps 5-2.

Left it super late but eventually leave Sabres slain: Caps beat Sabres 5-4 (SO)

The Washington Capitals got right back on the ice after a road loss to the New York Rangers and met another New York team in the Buffalo Sabres at home inside Capital One Arena. Both teams entered the Wednesday night matchup tied at 71 standings points.

Ilya Lyubushkin flung a shot that found its way through a crowd to open the scoring. JJ Peterka finished off a great feed from Jack Quinn to extend that lead. TJ Oshie quickly got one back on a power play. Tyson Jost canceled that out late in the first.

Evgeny Kuznetsov put one home early in the third to make things interesting. Zemgus Girgensons responded to end some of that fun. Alex Ovechkin tipped one in halfway through the third and Tom Wilson tied things up with the netminder pulled.

Rangers beat Ovi-less Caps 5-3

The Ovechkin-less Washington Capitals played guest to the New York Rangers on Tuesday night. There was a cartoon thing going on, and I didn’t understand it.

The Caps struggled early, spotting the Rangers the first goal, a pass from Tarasenko to Zibenejad. Nicolas Aube-Kubel scored from the slot, but 16 seconds later Zibenejad scored again. Before the period was up, P*trick K*ne made it 3-1 Rangers.

In the second period, Jacob Trouba finished off a nice passing sequence, and then Matt Irwin finished off a nice passing sequence too, so the goal difference remained the same.

Nic Dowd brought the Caps within one goal in the third period, but they couldn’t close the gap. Vesey got the empty-netter.

Caps lose 5-3.

Caps turn the Isles into big Long Island losers: Caps beat Islanders 5-1

The Washington Capitals made the trip up to Long Island for their second matchup of the season with the New York Islanders. The Isles are amid a fierce battle for a Wild Card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and the Caps were looking to throw a big ole wrench into that discussion.

Pierre Engvall kicked off the scoring with a bad bounce off Alex Alexeyev. Dylan Strome put something extra on a shot to tie the game and TJ Oshie gave the Caps a lead late in the first.

Anthony Mantha ended his 19-game streak without a goal to double the lead. Nic Dowd and Nicklas Backstrom added two more.

Fine! Devils beat Caps 3-2 in shootout

The Washington Capitals played the fearsome New Jersey Devils, and – honestly – they did fine! Invigorating feeling. Fine hockey from your Washington Capitals. Washington: home of fine hockey.

Late in the first period, Trevor van Riemsdyk scored a pinball-style goal. Erik Haula scored a power-play goal in the second by banking off Alexander Alexeyev, who got de-pantsed a bit on Dawson Mercer’s goal 90 seconds later. Dylan Strome crashed the net to turn Tom Wilson’s lucky bounce into the tying goal after forty minutes. A scoreless third pushed us into overtime, which was fun but fruitless.

Kings beat Caps 4-2 in last late-night game of the season (yay)

The Washington Capitals, in defiance of all decency, played a very late-night game against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night/Tuesday morning. Some of us have work in the morning.

The Kings clobbered the Caps in the first period, but the score remained null. Rasmus Sandin scored his first as a Cap with an improbable double-whiff to score. Deadline pick-up Vladislav Gavrikov returned fire with a clean-up shot, and then Viktor Arvidsson tipped in a go-ahead goal in the second period’s final minute.

In the third, Alex Ovechkin got a one-timer from the Ovi Spot to tie it up, but Mikey Anderson restored LA’s lead with a rush goal. Adrian Kempe got an empty-netter just before the buzzer.

Caps lose 4-2.

Caps lay a super smackdown on San Jose: Caps beat Sharks 8-3

The Capitals did some more trekking through California on Saturday as they met with the San Jose Sharks. It was a battle of two teams finding it hard to win hockey games right now.

Tomas Hertl caught the Caps on a line change and opened the scoring. Alexander Barabanov was left alone directly in front of Darcy Kuemper and extended San Jose’s lead.

Craig Smith sniped his first as a Cap, Nicolas Aube-Kubel somehow filtered the equalizer in, Matt Irwin blasted the Caps into the lead, and Smith added another with an interesting cross-check marker. TJ Oshie added a third-period marker, Nico Sturm brought one back for the Sharks, and Alex Ovechkin labeled one of his own.

Ovi and Dylan Strome with the cherries on top.

Securing a super late victory in California: Caps beat Ducks 3-2 (OT)

The Washington Capitals met with the Anaheim Ducks for the second and final time this season on Wednesday night. The Caps, after several pre-trade deadline moves, looked like a very different team than the one that fell to the Ducks 4-2 over a week ago.

Martin Fehervary snuck backdoor and found the back of the net for the opening goal. Troy Terry walked through a bunch of Caps and tied things up at one. Nothing in the whole second period and then Tom Wilson scored less than ten seconds into the third to give the Caps their lead back.

Trevor Zegras tied things back up. Wilson overtime game-winner.

Sabres beat Caps 7-4 in curiously coached game

The oldest team in the league, the Washington Capitals, played the youngest team in the league, the Buffalo Sabres, while the young team was rested and the old team was not. Despite all human wisdom urging otherwise, the Caps chose to play this one wiiiiiiide-open.

The game started off hot, with a bunch of chances before Casey Mittelstadt fed Dylan Cozens for a rush goal. Dylan Strome retaliated with a great assist from Nick Jensen, but then Evgeny Kuznetsov fed Tage Thompson a tantalizing turnover in the high slot to give Buffalo the lead again. TJ Oshie caught a pass from Strome to tie it 2-2 after twenty minutes.

The second period belonged to Buffalo. They scored four goals: Skinner, Girgensons, Hinostroza, and Cozens for his second of the day. Alex Ovechkin caught a rebound off the end-board for his 33rd of the season, then Sonny Milano scored a jailbreak goal to make 6-4 after two periods.

Dylan Cozens got the hat trick in the third period.

Caps lose.
