The Caps visited Sunrise on Thursday night. But before the game the NHL and the Florida Panthers honored the victims of last week’s tragedy in nearby Parkland. To call the ceremony powerful and heart-wrenching would be obvious and an understatement. The ceremony, and the thoughts it forces to the front of the mind of students and teachers being gunned down in a f@$#ing school building, really puts things in perspective. Hockey? Yeah sure, a fun hobby. And hopefully a hobby that helped give an outlet to a community likely in need of a distraction for a bit.
Maxim Mamin, which is a fun name, started the scoring early, banging home a rebound to give the home team an early lead. Late in the period Andre Burakovsky, who is sometimes not placed among the team’s top-12 forwards by his coach, tied the game with a shot through traffic. Just kidding, the goal was later credited to Lars Eller.
About halfway through the second, Andre Burakovsky fired home a PP goal to give the Caps the lead.
With a little under four minutes left, Nick Bjugstad tied it up. Vincent Trochek gave the Panthers the win with 18 seconds left on a PP goal after a STUPID penalty by Lars Eller.
