Pretty nice: Caps beat Panthers 4-2

On the same day Vince McMahon announced the rebirth of the XFL, the Caps visited Florida to take on the Panthers.

The Caps killed off three early penalties only to see Denis Malgin give the Panthers a 1-0 lead a little over halfway into the opening frame. The Caps finally got a power play and that led to Nick Backstrom tying the game late in the first.

Malgin scored again in the second to put the Panthers back on top. Later in the period, Brooks Orpik wisely threw the puck on net and Alex Ovechkin tipped it home to tie the game. Late in the second, John Carlson capped off some nice play from the top line and nicely put the good guys on top. Nice.

Early in the third, Brett Connolly took a good feed from Andre Burakovsky and put it in the net to put the Caps up 4-2.

Caps win 4-2!

Caps vs Canadiens pregame: We Vrana give Barry credit

The Caps are right back in action tonight, taking on the Canadiens in DC. Montreal is in sixth place in the Atlantic division, has lost three in a row, and is 2-6-2 in their last 10 games. The Caps are looking to bounce back from a lackluster performance on Thursday night in New Jersey.

The good news is Andre Burakovsky will draw in. After Jakub Vrana was benched during the third period of Thursday night’s game, it was reasonable to think he’d be the healthy scratch tonight. But sanity prevailed and it appears Devante Smith-Pelly will be the odd-man out.

It’s a 7:30 PM game and NBCSW will have the coverage on your teevee. Christopher from the comments will have your recap.

A rusty point: Caps lose 4-3

The Caps got back into action on Thursday night against the Devils in New Jersey.

Drew Stafford opened the scoring about eight minutes into the game with a breakaway goal. Just a few minutes later, Brett Connolly tied the game after TJ Oshie gamed his Corsi.

Early in the second, Andy Greene (of all people) put home a knuckling puck to put the home team back on top. Miles Wood got behind the snoozing Caps D off a draw and scored on a breakaway to make the game 3-1. Dmitry Orlov responded immediately with a mondo slapshot to bring the Caps back within one.

With less than five minutes left, Brett Connolly put home a sweet dish from Evgeny Kuznetsov to tie the game at three.

Taylor Hall did Taylor Hall things in overtime.

Caps lose 4-3.

Caps at Hurricanes pregame: Back at it

The Caps and Canes played on Thursday night in DC. One day later, the day is Friday and the Caps and Canes are scheduled to play in Raleigh. Got all that?

The Caps will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing 3-1 loss to the Canes on home ice.

The game begins at 7:30 PM on NBCSW. Chris will be recapping the Caps for you.

Cooked at home: Canes beat Caps 3-1

One day before the Caps go to Carolina to play the Hurricanes, the Hurricanes came to DC to play the Caps. Justin Williams was back in town to visit his old friends.

The first period ended as it began, with no score.

A little over halfway through the second, John Carlson made an ill-advised pass that Jordan Staal turned into a shorthanded goal to put the Canes up 1-0. But later in the period Lars Eller tied the game at one.

Victor Rask put the Canes up 2-1 with 9:06 left in the game. Sebastian Aho iced it with an empty net goal.

Caps lose 3-1.

Caps at Golden Knights pregame: You know the Schmidtuation

Things didn’t turn out great for the Caps on Friday night in Arizona. But the team in red can get back on track in Vegas on Saturday night against the Golden Knights.

You know the Schmidtuation. We know the Schmidtuation. The Golden Knights have a player named Nate Schmidt. We kind of like that guy and were bummed when Vegas selected him in the expansion draft.

Vegas is 14-2-1 at home so far this season which I’m sure has nothing to do with opposing players visiting casinos and the like while they are in town.

It’s an 8 PM game and NBCSW has the TV coverage. Some guy named Peter Hassett will have the recap for you tonight.

Caps at Coyotes pregame: Desert Grubi

The Caps visit Glendale, Arizona tonight to take on the Coyotes in a game of hockey sanctioned by the National Hockey League. The Coyotes, a franchise with alumni such as Chris Pronger and Pavel Datsyuk, have lost seven in a row. Their record on the season is 7-24-5 with an equally impressive minus-45 goal differential.

If you sit down to watch this game at 7 PM, you’ll be early. If you turn on NBSCW, you won’t find any hockey tonight. The game is at 9 PM on The Plus, AKA NBCSW+. The recap will be brought to you by CFTC.

Come together: snapshot 4

The Caps are on a roll. They’ve won three in a row, eight of their last 10, and as things stand before the start of play on Sunday, they sit in first place in the league’s toughest division. What a difference a month can make.

There’s reasons to think this success can continue (hello Kuznetsov-Vrana combo and #TopLineTom). But, as Peter recently pointed out, there’s some concerning things going on with this team.

I’m not nearly as confident as I once was that this team will be one of the top teams in the league at the end of the season. But things have come together for this team recently. I think this team is clearly playoff-worthy, but given the current playoff format and the strength of the Metro, it’s not a lock. Not yet.

Three things I’m highly interested in keeping an eye on as this season continues:

Can the third line find their dominance from last season?
Can the team find a fourth line that is at least passable?
Can the team stay relatively health?

The more yeses to those three questions, the better of this team is going to be.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the numbers to see where things stand for the first place Washington Capitals.

Can’t stop, won’t stop: Caps beat Bruins 5-3

The Caps entered Boston, on Thursday night, having last lost to the Bruins sometime during the Grover Cleveland administration. The streak lives on.

With about two and a half minutes to go in the first period, Jakub Vrana split the Bruins defense and put home a slick shot to bring the good guys up 1-0.

In the second, Patrice Bergeron put away a power play goal to tie the game at 1-1. The Caps answered with a power play goal of their own later in the period. Nicklas Backstrom banked in a beautiful feed from Evgeny Kuzetnsov to make it 2-1 Caps. Rumor is Kuzy called bank.

In the third, Christian Djoos made a nice feed to Alex Chiasson in front of the Bruins cage. Mr. Chiasson put the biscuit in the basket to extend the Caps’ lead to 3-1. With just under 10 minutes to go, Brooks Orpik was sent to the box on a questionable call. It didn’t matter because you can’t stop Alex Chiasson. Chiasson blocked a shot at the blue line and was off to the races. He buried the breakaway chance to push the lead to 4-1. David Krejci pulled the Bruins within two late. Alex Ovechkin iced the game with an empty-net bank shot. He definitely called bank. Bergeron added a late meaningless goal.

Caps win 5-3.
