Pittsburgh native Logan Cooley on someday playing against childhood idol Alex Ovechkin: ‘I might be a little starstruck’

ARLINGTON, VA — The Washington Capitals’ practice facility played host to dozens of the NHL’s best prospects last week for the NHLPA Rookie Showcase. For Logan Cooley, the third overall pick in 2022, the event also meant a chance to skate on the ice where his childhood idol plies his trade.

Cooley grew up in Pittsburgh but was enamored by Alex Ovechkin’s play from a young age. Despite learning to skate through Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins youth program, he became a rare Caps fan deep in rival territory.

Now, he could soon face off against both Crosby and Ovechkin as a member of the Arizona Coyotes.

Leafs’ Matthew Knies calls Auston Matthews ‘best overall player’ in the NHL, says Spencer Carbery is ‘deserving’ of Capitals job

ARLINGTON, VA– This year may be Matthew Knies’ rookie campaign, but the Toronto Maple Leafs forward has already had a taste of NHL hockey.

After reaching the NCAA Championship in his sophomore year with the University of Minnesota, Knies joined the Leafs for the tail end of the regular season, suiting up in three games. He would record four points (1g, 3a) in seven playoff appearances — including an assist on John Tavares’ series-winning OT goal — before a collision with Florida’s Sam Bennett prematurely ended his season.

During his brief tenure with the Leafs, Knies got to know both then-assistant coach Spencer Carbery — now head coach of the Capitals — and superstar Auston Matthews.

Knies spoke on coach and player alike on Tuesday at the NHLPA/Upper Deck Rookie Showcase.

Why Connor Bedard thinks the Capitals should be excited for Alexander Suzdalev and Andrew Cristall

ARLINGTON, VA– 2023 first overall pick Connor Bedard spent Tuesday at the Capitals’ practice facility as a participant in the NHLPA Rookie Showcase. Though he’ll be playing nearly 600 miles away in Chicago, Bedard has ties to DC through friends Alexander Suzdalev and Andrew Cristall.

Suzdalev shared a line with Bedard for much of the 2022-23 season with the Regina Pats, while Cristall and Bedard met as children while playing in Vancouver and now play in a roller-hockey league together.

Both players earned a shout-out during Bedard’s press conference Tuesday, where the Blackhawk-to-be highlighted the skills he’s gotten to see up close.

Alex Ovechkin has grown to be a huge fan of American football. Not so much baseball.

With his return to DC this weekend, Alex Ovechkin is back in Washington just in time for the start of another sport’s season: American football. He spoke on his growing love of the game in a recent interview with Artem Batrak and Alexei Shevchenko of the Russian outlet It’s Hockey, Bro!, explaining how he developed into a fan.

In the interview, later transcribed by Sports.ru, Ovechkin explains how he wasn’t familiar with either football or baseball until starting his NHL career in Washington. He’s become a big fan of the Washington Commanders, but admitted he still doesn’t care much for American’s National Pastime.

USA women’s sled hockey team wins gold at Para Ice Hockey Women’s World Challenge

Team USA took home the gold in women’s sled hockey on Sunday, beating Team Canada 2-0 to win the second Para Ice Hockey Women’s World Challenge. The Americans won all four of their games in the tournament to defend their 2022 title.

“I’m ecstatic about the way that we played this game going undefeated and not allowing any goals on net,” said defender Lera Doederlein, who led the tournament with eight points (3g, 5a). “This is a chance for us to show the next generation across the country and the world that Para ice hockey is here to stay and here to grow.”

Flyers prospect Matvei Michkov scratched by SKA St. Petersburg in KHL season opener

Matvei Michkov watched SKA St. Petersburg’s KHL season opener from the press box on Saturday as an unexpected healthy scratch.

Head coach Roman Rotenberg sat the 18-year-old forward in the team’s 2-1 victory over Dynamo Moscow.

Spencer Carbery and family attend Washington Nationals game

New Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery paid a visit to Nationals Park on Saturday as the Nats took on the Miami Marlins. After becoming the franchise’s 20th-ever bench boss in May, Carbery will start his first training camp with the Capitals in less than three weeks.

Carbery attended the game alongside his wife, Casey, and children, Hudson and Vivian. The family also got to meet Spencer’s baseball counterpart, posing for a photo with Nationals manager Dave Martinez.

Zach Fucale records 31-save victory in KHL debut with Traktor Chelyabinsk

Zach Fucale didn’t take long to earn his first KHL win. The former Capitals goaltender made his regular-season debut with Traktor Chelyabinsk on Saturday, recording a 2-1 victory over Lada Tolgliatti to open the season.

Fucale already defeated Lada during the preseason, recording a shutout with former teammate Evgeny Kuznetsov watching from the stands to win the Chelyabinsk Governor’s Cup.

Professional Women’s Hockey League announces locations for initial six teams, details on draft and free agency

The PWHL (Professional Women’s Hockey League) announced more details about its new league, unveiling locations where the league’s six teams will play starting in January 2024. Teams will be split between Canada and the United States, with teams in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Boston, and the New York City area.

Tuesday’s announcement follows PWHL ownership’s acquisition of the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) in June, effectively ending the PWHPA-PHF split. All seven PHF teams were dissolved upon the sale and the PWHL will debut with six entirely new teams.

Nicklas Backstrom, Joel Edmundson join informal practices ahead of training camp

Nicklas Backstrom has officially made his return to DC, jumping in for an informal skate at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. Backstrom spent the summer in his hometown of Gävle, Sweden while continuing to recover from undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in summer 2022.

Offseason addition Joel Edmundson was also on the ice Monday, making his first appearance in DC since joining the team in a July 1 trade with the Montreal Canadiens.
