Spencer Carbery on his phone conversations with Alex Ovechkin: ‘You can just feel his energy and excitement and enthusiasm’

The Capitals will have a new look behind the bench this fall, with Spencer Carbery taking the reins as the franchise’s 20th head coach. Carbery will head a veteran-laden roster — including captain Alex Ovechkin — as they attempt to rebound after missing the playoffs for the first time in nine years.

Ovechkin has stayed in Moscow for the summer but has remained in contact with the the coaching staff in Washington. With training camp less than a month away, Carbery told NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti that Ovechkin is eager to get to work.

Peter Bondra combines with Jonathan Toews to recreate Sonny Milano and Trevor Zegras’ ‘Dishigan’ goal

More than 15 years after retiring, Peter Bondra is still showing elite skill.

Bondra, who is a frequent participant in Capitals alumni games, was back on the ice this past weekend, teaming up with former Blackhawk Jonathan Toews for a goal straight out of a video game. In a Michigan-style assist, Bondra scooped the puck up from behind an unsuspecting Jaroslav Halak, flipping it over the net before Toews tapped it in.

The play came during Marian Hossa’s Goodbye Game in Slovakia, featuring a star-studded roster that included fellow Capitals alumni Jaroslav Halak, Zdeno Chara, and Michal Kempny. A foggy Pavol Demitra Ice Stadium in Trencin served as the venue.

Hendrix Lapierre calls Calder Cup championship with Hershey Bears ‘the best moment of my career so far’

Hendrix Lapierre had a whirlwind rookie season with the Hershey Bears. Not only did he win the Calder Cup in his first full year as a pro, but he cemented a spot in Bears history when he scored the game-tying goal in Game Seven against the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Now, the 21-year-old once again has his sights set on Washington. Lapierre spoke to French-language outlet RDS while participating in a charity tournament near Montreal. He reflected back on his championship season with the Bears before discussing what he aims to do next.

Jakub Vrana plays in intrasquad game for SHL’s Linköping HC

St. Louis Blues forward Jakub Vrana laced up his skates on Saturday, joining his former team Linköping HC (LHC) for an intrasquad scrimmage. Alongside fellow LHC alumni, Vrana competed against current players at the team’s season kickoff.

Vrana previously spent four seasons in the Linköping organization, playing at both the junior and SHL level before making the jump to North America in 2015.

Tom Wilson says he’s ‘starting to feel a lot better’ after ACL injury

Tom Wilson signed the biggest contract of his career in early August, inking a seven-year, $45.5 million extension that could take him to retirement. The Capitals were without Wilson for much of last season after the forward tore his ACL during the 2022 playoffs. Wilson made his return in January but struggled to find his previous form through the remainder of the season.

During an appearance on TSN 1050’s First Up, Wilson discussed the progress of his recovery, as well as rehabbing much of last season with Nicklas Backstrom.

Tom Wilson excited Erik Karlsson is a Penguin, looking forward to ‘try and make his life difficult’

The Pittsburgh Penguins made a big addition in early August, adding star defenseman Erik Karlsson in a blockbuster three-team trade. After five seasons with the San Jose Sharks, Karlsson will jump headlong into the Caps-Pens rivalry when the two teams face off for Washington’s season opener on October 13th.

Tom Wilson, for one, is ready. During a radio interview with TSN 1050’s First Up, Wilson gave his thoughts on the trade and what it meant for the rivalry.

Reigning Norris winner or not, Wilson has no plans to make it easy for Karlsson.

Cale Makar named cover athlete for EA Sports’ NHL 24

With less than two months to go until the start of the 2023-24 season, EA Sports has named Colorado Avalanche blueliner Cale Makar as their cover athlete for the upcoming NHL 24.

Makar will become just the third Avalanche player to appear on the cover of the video game series. He’ll be the first to do so since Joe Sakic replaced Danny Heatley on the cover of NHL 2004.

Philipp Grubauer volunteers his time at a Seattle-area horse rescue. It helps him ‘find that happy balance.’

Seattle Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer has already made a mark on the team. He signed with the Kraken as a free agent in 2021 after a three-year stint in Colorado that culminated in a third-place bid for the Vezina Trophy. Less than two years later, the former Capitals goalie would backstop the Kraken to their first-ever playoff series win against the Avs.

Grubauer discovered a love of horses while in Colorado and knew he’d want to continue in Seattle. He soon started volunteering at Save a Forgotten Equine (SAFE), a horse rescue facility in nearby Redmond, Washington.

In a recently released video from the Kraken, Grubauer goes behind the scenes to explain what makes the organization so special to him.

Martin Fehervary wins Robert Svehla Award as Slovak defenseman of the year

Martin Fehervary received a big honor in his home country on Tuesday.

The Capitals defenseman was named the top rearguard of Slovakia during the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation’s annual awards show.

In his second full NHL season, Fehervary scored six goals and had 16 points in 67 games.

Hershey Bears sign Kevin O’Neil to one-year AHL contract

The Hershey Bears have signed forward Kevin O’Neil to a one-year AHL deal. O’Neil made his AHL debut with the Bears last year, playing two games for Hershey on a PTO.

In 53 games with the South Carolina Stingrays last season, O’Neil tallied 50 points (24g, 26a). He also played three games on an AHL PTO with the Colorado Eagles.
