Alexander Suzdalev, Ryan Leonard, and Ryan Chesley to compete in 2023 World Junior Summer Showcase

Less than a month after Development Camp, several of the Capitals’ top prospects will be back on the ice to compete at USA Hockey’s 2023 World Junior Summer Showcase. Alexander Suzdalev will represent Sweden at the tournament, while Ryan Leonard and Ryan Chesley will play for USA’s Team White.

The showcase will take place in Plymouth, Michigan from July 27th to August 4th, with the first game coming on July 29th. A split squad of American players–Team White and Team Blue–will play alongside Sweden and Finland in the four-team tournament.

NFL officially approves sale of Washington Commanders to Josh-Harris led group, fines Dan Snyder $60 million

The NFL has approved the sale of the Washington Commanders to a partnership group led by Josh Harris. In a special session on Thursday, the league’s owners voted unanimously to allow the purchase. The deal could close as early as Friday, per the Washington Post.

The Snyder family and the new Harris-led ownership group had entered into a formal agreement to sell the team in May. As well as voting to allow the sale, the NFL fined Dan Snyder $60 million following the league’s investigation into sexual and financial misconduct by Snyder and the Commanders.

Tom Wilson and Devante Smith-Pelly reunite on the ice for summer hockey training

Tom Wilson caught up with a beloved former teammate while training in Toronto this week. Devante Smith-Pelly joined Wilson on the ice during Paragenix Systems Inc.’s offseason program. The two were all smiles while skating in a photo originally posted by the company on Instagram.

Smith-Pelly, who scored seven huge goals during the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup Run, announced his retirement from professional hockey last December. Since then, he returned to DC for the Capitals’ Black History Night, where he dropped the game’s ceremonial first puck.

Max Pacioretty had 8 to 10 teams make him an offer in free agency: The Capitals ‘just made the most sense for him and his family’

The Washington Capitals made an unexpected signing in free agency this summer, inking forward Max Pacioretty to a one-year deal, worth $2 million plus a possible $2 million in performance bonuses. Pacioretty represents a somewhat unknown quantity: though he previously put up impressive numbers with the Montreal Canadiens and Vegas Golden Knights, he missed nearly all of last year with two Achilles tendon tears and will not be available to start the season with the Caps.

Apparently, the Capitals weren’t the only team willing to take a gamble on Pacioretty. In a recent episode of his podcast Agent Provocateur for the Steve Dangle Podcast Network, Pacioretty’s agent Allan Walsh revealed that at least a quarter of the league made an offer, with Washington coming out on top.

Flyers staff caught on hot mic mocking reporter during Garnet Hathaway’s introductory press conference

Garnet Hathaway’s first press conference as a Philadelphia Flyer went viral, but not for reasons the organization wanted. After signing a two-year deal with the Flyers on the first day of free agency, Hathaway answered questions from assembled media in an introductory Zoom meeting on Tuesday.

When it was Giana Han from Philadelphia Inquirer’s turn, she asked Hathaway what drew him to join a team that is in the midst of a clear rebuild. As Han asked her question, a member of the Flyers’ staff was caught ridiculing her on a hot mic in a since-deleted stream on the team’s social media.

Hershey Bears will raise Calder Cup banner at home opener on October 14th

Giant Center will soon have yet another Calder Cup banner hanging from its rafters. The Hershey Bears announced that they will be hosting a pregame banner-raising ceremony celebrating the 2022-23 championship team before their 7 pm home opener on October 14th against the Belleville Senators.

The Bears set an AHL record in June when they defeated the Coachella Valley Firebirds in Game Seven to win the franchise’s 12th Calder Cup. Next season, they’ll attempt to win back-to-back championships, a feat no AHL team has accomplished since the Bears did it in 2009 and 2010.

French goaltender Antoine Keller didn’t expect to be drafted, was on vacation in Spain when selected by the Capitals

ARLINGTON, VA – Hockey’s top young prospects descended on Nashville in June for 2023 NHL Draft. They sat in the stands, sometimes for hours, each hoping to hear their name called. For some it was all but guaranteed; for others it was a distant dream.

French-Swiss goaltender Antoine Keller didn’t think he’d be among the chosen. He’d made his peace with that fact, instead watching draft day on television while vacationing in Spain. But then the Capitals made a trade to acquire one final pick in the seventh round. With that pick, they selected Keller, the first-ever French player drafted by the franchise and the sixth French draftee in NHL history. Only 12 French nationals have ever competed in the league. Now Keller will look to be the 13th.

“I’m very happy,” he said. “Very happy to represent my country. I’m very proud to be French and it’s very nice. I didn’t think about it and didn’t realize a lot. I’m just happy.”

Nicklas Backstrom elated despite finishing last in horse race in Swedish hometown: ‘Got a little dirty, it was very fun’

Nicklas Backstrom is officially a two-sport athlete.

On Friday, Backstrom participated in the NHL Trotting Challenge at Gävletravet, a horse-racing track in his hometown of Gävle, Sweden. He competed against fellow NHLers Elias Lindholm (CGY) and Calle Jarnkrok (TOR) in a tandem harness race, pulled by a horse in a wheeled cart alongside a professional jockey.

Though Jarnkrok took the win this time, Backstrom took the loss in stride.

How playing roller hockey with Connor Bedard helps Andrew Cristall grow his game on the ice

ARLINGTON, VA – Andrew Cristall, the Capitals’ second round pick in the 2023 draft, has had quite the week. Selected 40th overall, Cristall left for Washington the following day to participate in the Capitals’ annual development camp, where he’s had the chance to learn alongside plenty of the team’s young prospects.

Though it’s been a milestone week for his career, the draft and development camp have put a hamper on Cristall’s usual summer plans: roller hockey.

He’s spent the last two summers playing for the Great Guys of the North Shore Inline Hockey League, but skipped a game to attend the draft and will miss another while in D.C.

Also on that team is first-overall sensation Connor Bedard.

Brian MacLellan says ‘nothing’s panned out’ despite Capitals’ aggressive offseason strategy

ARLINGTON, VA — An already-aging Capitals roster got older on Saturday, signing 34-year-old Max Pacioretty and trading for 30-year-old Joel Edmundson.

Those moves diverged from what had appeared to be the Capitals’ planned strategy last month, when general manager Brian MacLellan signaled that the team intended to get younger this offseason.

MacLellan seemed to confirm on Sunday that the last week hasn’t gone as hoped. The Caps failed to trade up at the draft and the team tried to trade for younger players but couldn’t reach a deal.
