The Hershey Bears have filled the hole left in their crease after the Winnipeg Jets claimed Clay Stevenson off NHL waivers on Monday.
Hershey announced Tuesday that they have signed veteran netminder Cal Petersen to a one-year AHL contract. Petersen had been with the Bears on a professional tryout basis after doing the same with the Washington Capitals during their training camp and preseason.
Petersen, 31, arrives in Hershey with 106 career NHL games under his belt, most recently for the Philadelphia Flyers during the 2023-24 campaign. He also has extensive AHL experience with the Ontario Reign, Lehigh Valley Phantoms, and Iowa Wild, spending all of last season with the latter.
In 33 games for the Wild, he posted a 13-16-2 record with a 2.73 goals-against average, a .896 save percentage, and four shutouts. Petersen was also the goaltender for the Phantoms in their back-to-back playoff series losses to the Hershey Bears in 2024 and 2025.
During his NHL career with the Flyers and Los Angeles Kings, Petersen is 46-44-10 with a 2.96 goals-against average, a .903 save percentage, and four shutouts.
Petersen will be battling with Mitch Gibson and Garin Bjorklund to see who becomes Hershey’s new number-one goalie with Stevenson now in Winnipeg. The Bears get their regular season underway on Saturday against the Charlotte Checkers.
