Alex Ovechkin jumped another rung on the NHL’s all-time points list Sunday against the Utah Hockey Club.
Ovechkin notched his 1,591st point (879g and 712a in 1,465 GP) after assisting on Pierre-Luc Dubois power-play goal in the first period, passing Phil Esposito (717g-873a–1,590p in 1,282 GP) for the eleventh-most in NHL history.
Ovechkin got the apple after unleashing a huge shot from the top of the circles. Utah goaltender Connor Ingram made the initial save, but the rebound squirted loose, causing a huge scramble in front of the net. From the side of the goal frame, Dubois was eventually able to stick-handle around the chaos and score.
Ingram would leave the game after the goal. He appeared to be shaken up after Ovi’s heavy and high shot.

Ovi would later notch two more assists, points number 1,592 and 1,593, on Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson’s goals in the third period.
The Wilson goal, coming at six-on-five with 1:32 remaining, tied the game 4-4 and sent the game to overtime.
Ovechkin initially tied Phil Esposito with point no. 1,590 after scoring his 879th career goal during Thursday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Next on the list for Ovechkin is Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche legend Joe Sakic. Ovechkin would need 50 more points for sole possession for tenth, meaning he would likely need one more season to reach that mark.
