ARLINGTON, VA — The Washington Capitals could start the new year down a defenseman, labeling Martin Fehervary day-to-day with an upper-body injury after he fell to friendly fire against the Boston Bruins Tuesday afternoon.
The 25-year-old defenseman did not participate in the team’s optional skate Wednesday but will be reevaluated Thursday morning before the team faces the Minnesota Wild at home.
Fehervary’s injury came just over five minutes into the third period against Boston when Tom Wilson accidentally struck him in the face with a high stick. He immediately went down the tunnel and did not return to the game, ending the contest with 14:10 of ice time.
Before Tuesday, Fehervary averaged the third-most minutes of any Capitals skater, playing 19:33 per game behind John Carlson and Jakob Chychrun. He has yet to miss a game this season after a series of injuries limited him to 66 games in 2023-24.
The Capitals will play three games in the next five days, competing at home against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday and the New York Rangers on Saturday before traveling to Buffalo to face the Sabres on Monday night.
