It’s October and here’s another sign that Washington Capitals regular season hockey is near: the Caps are playing their final game of the preseason.

In what amounts to a dress rehersal for Game 1 next week, the Capitals are taking on the Boston Bruins and dressing what should be their full lines and defense pairings. Well, except for the third line, where Andrew Cristall will try to impress a final time to earn a preliminary spot on the roster.

Cristall is battling it out with Sonny Milano (scratched), Ivan Miroshnichenko (scratched), and Jakub Vrana (sractched) to make the team. We’ll see how today goes and if he makes a case for himself or for Chris Patrick to send him back to junior.

Caps-Bruins can be watched on Monumental Sports Network. Puck drop is shortly after 7 pm. Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin have the call.

One other important note: Charlie Lindgren is expected to play the entire game in net.

Starting lineup

1st period

Puck is dropped.

🚨 1-0 Washington Capitals. WSH SHG: Aliaksei Protas (1). Unassisted. Time: 09:00.

Protas won a defensive-zone faceoff, takes it to the net, and scores while Nic Dowd is in the box. The Capitals had the first 7 shots on goal before Protas’s strike.

At intermission: The Capitals outshot the Bruins 9 to 2 in the first period and out-attempted them 18 to 6 at 5v5.

2nd period

Puck is dropped.

At intermission: There were no goals. There was not much that happened. The Capitals are leading in shots on goal 19 to 9 and in attempts 39 to 17 at 5v5.

3rd period

Puck is dropped.

Brandon Bussi goes to the splits to make a huge save on Andrew Mangiapane on a breakaway.

John Carlson preserves Charlie Lindgren’s perfect night.

🚨 2-0 Washington Capitals. WSH Goal: Trevor van Riemsdyk (1). Assists: T. Raddysh. Time: 14:20.

TVR with another trick shot, this time a casual backhand to the roof from no angle, to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead.

Caps win 2-0. A win is a win, but that was punishing to watch as a fan. But! The preseason is now officially over. The Capitals outshot the mostly minor-league Bruins 32 to 17 and out-attempted them 52 to 24 at 5v5.
