Logan Thompson’s pads may be getting rethought, but his masks have been high art.
His latest bucket, painted by Dave Fried of Friedesigns, is inspired by the Washington Capitals’ third jersey this season, the black Screaming Eagle sweater.
Fried combined the Screagle with flaming skulls on the predominantly black-colored mask, tying it together with pops of orange and blue flames and metallic bronze details.

The chin features LT, Thompson’s nickname. The backplate features the team’s Capitol Dome logo, which was the crest of Washington’s home jersey during Alex Ovechkin’s rookie season in the NHL.
The mask’s overall design is a tribute to former NHL goaltender Mikka Kiprusoff. Kiprusoff spent the majority of his career with Thompson’s hometown Calgary Flames. Thompson also previously wore pads with the Vegas Golden Knights inspired by his childhood favorite goalie.
“I was a big Kipper fan growing up,” Thompson told Jesse Granger last November. “I just remember how he and [Jarome] Iginla were such impact players. Calgary was bad, but Kipper would give them a chance to win every night, just making ridiculous saves.”
Thompson’s other mask for this season, which he has been working in during the preseason, features an eagle along with DC landmarks.
Thompson made his Capitals preseason debut on Wednesday, impressing in the team’s 5-3 win over the New Jersey Devils. He made 25 saves in the effort.
The Capitals acquired Logan from Vegas over the offseason for two third-round picks.
