Joe Snively may reportedly be on his way out of the Capitals organization this summer.
Per Sport Express journalist Arthur Khairullin, rumors are swirling in the KHL that Snively is making a move abroad. Snively, whose contract with Washington expires after this season, is currently trying to help the Hershey Bears repeat as Calder Cup champions.
“Washington forward Joe Snively could move to the KHL this offseason,” Khairullin writes on his Telegram as translated via Google Translate. “The player’s contract with the Capitals is expiring. Snively is 28 years old, plays on the left, is technical, with a good pass.”
The Herndon, Virginia native was Hershey’s leading scorer during the regular season with 59 points (14g, 45a) and has chipped in an additional seven points (7a) in eight playoff games. He’s been with the Capitals’ organization since finishing up with Yale University in 2019.
Washington signed him to his first NHL deal, a two-year contract, in March of 2019. He has since signed two extensions to remain with the club for the past three seasons. In 27 career NHL games, Snively has recorded 11 points (6g, 5a).
Snively’s former teammate both in high school and the Bears, Sam Anas, signed with Dinamo Minsk in the KHL ahead of last season. Anas led Minsk in scoring with 46 points (21g, 25a) in 60 games. He inked a two-year extension with the KHL club in January.
Zach Fucale, another of Snively’s former teammates in Hershey, also signed in the KHL for the 2023-24 season. Snively has also played with Bogdan Trineyev, Ivan Miroshnichenko, Aliaksei Protas, Alex Alexeyev, and others with experience in Russia’s top league.
As things currently stand, Snively’s full focus is with the Bears in the Eastern Conference Finals. Hershey went up 1-0 in their series against the Cleveland Monsters on Thursday night. Snively recorded an assist on Ethen Frank’s first-period goal.
