Washington Capitals hold moment of silence for Chris Simon

The Washington Capitals held a moment of silence for Chris Simon, who tragically passed away at age 52 on Monday.

Simon was a member of the Colorado Avalanche’s 1996 Stanley Cup championship team before landing in DC and playing parts of seven seasons with the Capitals.

“The Washington Capitals and Monumental Sports & Entertainment are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Chris Simon,” Capitals PA announcer Wes Johnson said. “Chris was a fixture in Washington for parts of seven seasons and was an integral member of the 1998 team that reached the first Stanley Cup Final in franchise history. Our entire organization is extends our deepest condolences to his family and his friends. Now please join us in a moment of silence as we come together to remember and honor the life of legacy of Chris Simon.”

Simon tallied 151 points (72g, 79a) in 320 games with the Caps, including a career-high 29 goals in 1999-00.

The Capitals also released a statement the previous day:

The Washington Capitals are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Chris Simon. Chris was a fixture in Washington for parts of seven seasons and was an integral member of the 1998 team that reached the first Stanley Cup Final in franchise history. Our entire organization extends our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

“Very sad news,” Peter Bondra posted on Twitter. “Chris was a great teammate, line mate, and friend. Always kind. Have a lot of great memories with him. Rest in peace, Si.”
