Special teams splat: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals could not find any success on five separate power play opportunities against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night. That led to their eventual 3-2 regulation downfall and the end of their three game winning streak.

The Caps out-shot the Flyers 28 to 27, but were out-attempted at five-on-five 42 to 38.

  • I was not a fan of the overall effort here. You can blame tired legs, but the Flyers were also playing the back portion of a back-to-back. The Caps were far too careless with the puck, decided to take another first period off, and couldn’t find their usual miraculous comeback. The Flyers owned the first and third periods of this game, taking the five-on-five scoring chance battle 20 to 12 and high danger chance battle 8 to 3 in those two frames.
  • Jakub Vrana got on the scoresheet again goalwise. He now has 19 total on the season and points in four straight games.
  • Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov also both extended their own point streaks to seven games.

  • I thought Braden Holtby at least played well in the loss. He made 24 stops on 27 shots.
  • At least we got that video of Sergei Ovechkin out of this game.
