Former Capital Troy Brouwer signs one-year deal with Florida Panthers

The Sunshine State will be getting some Brouwer Pouwer next season.

The Florida Panthers announced on Monday afternoon that they had signed former Capitals forward Troy Brouwer to a one-year, one-way contract worth $850,000. The contract signing leaves the Panthers with nearly $2 million in cap space, and two players over the 23-player the roster limit.

Brouwer had spent the last two years with the Calgary Flames before being placed on waivers and bought out during the offseason. He had originally signed a four-year contract worth $4.5 million annually with the Flames.

Brouwer had six goals and 22 points in 76 games last season.

Brouwer is best known in Washington for scoring the GWG in the 2015 NHL Winter Classic at Nationals Park with 12.3 seconds remaining in the game. He was traded later that year to the St. Louis Blues as part of a deal that brought TJ Oshie to Washington.

More from the Panthers:

Florida Panthers President of Hockey Operations & General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the Panthers have agreed to terms with forward Troy Brouwer on a one-year, one-way contract.

“Troy is a skilled veteran forward with championship experience,” said Tallon. “He adds depth to our forward group and his leadership will help our developing young core take the next step this season.”

Brouwer, 33, appeared in 76 games recording 22 points (6-16-22) with the Calgary Flames during the 2017-18 season. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound native of Vancouver, BC has played in 763 career National Hockey League games recording 341 points (169-172-341) with Chicago (2006-07 to 2010-11), Washington (2011-12 to 2014-15), St. Louis (2015-16) and Calgary (2016-17 to 2017-18). In 2013-14 and 2014-15, Brouwer produced a career-high 43 points in consecutive seasons, while setting personal bests in goals (25, 2013-14) and assists (22, 2014-15).

Brouwer has played in 102 NHL playoff games recording 34 points (15-19-34). Brouwer was a member of the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks and helped the St. Louis Blues reach the Western Conference Final in 2016 with eight goals and 13 points in 20 games played.

Brouwer was originally selected by Chicago in the seventh round (214th overall) of the 2004 NHL Draft.
