Former Capitals defenseman Mike Green will be continuing his career in Detroit.
Saturday, the Associated Press’s Stephen Whyno reported that the pending UFA has signed a two-year, $10.75 million extension ($5.375m) with the Red Wings. The 32-year-old defenseman is coming off a three-year, $18 million contract ($6m AAV) that he originally signed in 2015.

After John Carlson signed an eight-year, $64 million contract extension with the Capitals, Green was slated to be one of the best remaining defensemen on the market. Instead he will stay in Motown where an active Red Wings team may also add Thomas Vanek and Jonathan Bernier on UFA deals.
It’s believed Thomas Vanek is considering a return to Detroit. Mike Green is staying put and the Wings likely to add Bernier Sunday as well.

Green, an All-Star for the first time since the 2011 season, scored eight goals and tallied 25 assists in 66 games. In late March, Green’s season ended after having cervical spine surgery.
The Red Wings missed the playoffs and finished 24 points out of the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference last season.
